As a Health Activist, you're probably up-to-date on all of the burgeoning social media trends— especially those related to your specific health interest or online health community.
Right now, as I write this, the
#beatcancer phrase is trending on twitter (and possibly on all the other social networks as well.) The idea is that, "
for every tweet, Facebook (Facebook) status update, or blog post containing the #beatcancer hashtag, eBay/PayPal and MillerCoors will be donating 1 cent to cancer research. With a captive audience of social media addicts, the hope is that the campaign will go viral and raise significant money for several charities."
In addition to the 1¢ per hashtag post, there is a Guinness World Records attempt in the make the record for "most social media mentions."
What do you think of this particular social media campaign?
How have your other online communities and groups used #hashtags to come together and raise awareness?
What similar social media campaigns would you deem "successful?" Do you think this one will be?
Is this the future of fund-raising? What would you add to this campaign? What are your concerns with campaigns like this?
Learn more about the campaign at
Mashable and the
BeatCancerEverywhere website. Pay attention to the bottom of the
beatcancer site - where there are live updates of direct donation totals to cancer-related organizations via PayPal. Organizations include:
Alex's Lemonade Stand,
StandUp2Cancer,
Bright Pink, and
Spirit Jump. There are scrolling marquees with donors names and amounts. This is, I think, a great way for people to almost automatically "do more" than simply retweet or reblog the hashtag.
What do you think of this additional donation option?
