What are the benefits of physical therapy related to balance and dystonnia?

I have balance problems for many many yrs because of my dystonia. After DBS they seemed to get worse. So my neuro has ordered physical therapy.

I loved physical therapy!

Before I was diagnosed with dystonia, but while I had symptoms I went to regular physical therapy 1.5 hours 3/x per week. It helped so much and taught me to stretch on a regular basis, and improved my complementary muscles that were getting messed up because of the dystonic ones....

Hot yoga actually increased my balance the best though.. The heat relaxed my muscles enough for me to actually stretch them some.. and over time (months) I was able to actually balance on my right leg, which I have difficulty doing due to my right sided dystonia.

I would not call physical therapy a cure.. but it definetly helped. The prblem is you have to do it A LOT to make a difference. I was going to Yoga, (hot and contemporary) 4x a week. In physical therpy I had electrostimulation, massage, heat therapy, cold therapy, massage, ultrasound, weight training, and chiropractic adjustments done at every visit.

I have been involved with physio for about 4 years. It has helped much with maintaining flexion, relieving pain, balance problems. I do some weight training, with much stretching, massage, balance work. It does take a lot of time & at my age (55) I need the benefits of regular exercise anyway. It does take a lot of time, it does help me, but, I had to learn the discipline & was lucky enough to find therapists with Movement Disorder experience. I also do 'modified' yoga & tai chi.
