I was recently sent this video which is also transcribed on how to help children who have ADHD be successful while in school. I don’t have children, nor do I deal with adult ADD/ADHD, but I thought that I would throw it out there for those of you who do!

Helping Kids With ADHD Succeed in School - a 6 minute video

Transcript piece:

ANQOINETTE CROSBY: How does having ADHD affect a child’s ability to do schoolwork?

PATRICIA QUINN, MD: Children with ADHD have trouble paying attention. They have difficulty with completing assignments, and they frequently get distracted by other things going on in the classroom. So they’re main difficulty really centers around starting their work, getting their work finished. And some children also have trouble with their behaviors or relationships with both the teachers and other children in the classroom. All of these combined create difficulties for them in the classroom.

Sarah, thanks so much for posting this link and information. I have some friends whose children have been diagnosed with ADHD, and I will be directing them to this link!

I’m amazed at the leaps and bounds of ADHD research and discovery even in just the past 10-15 years. It’s come a LONG way!

(I’ve told them about WEGO in general, so I hope they’re taking advantage of the abundance of resources here!)

Diagnosed with ADD & OCD:
My son was diagnosed with ADD and OCD about 8 years ago and it has been an advantage in and outside of school. His doing very well in now, but that’s because we made the financial commitment to a private school that specialties in small classes and teachers that can provide individualized academic plans. His therapy has also been critical to his success (prescription meds and talk therapy).

But, the #1 influence on his success is my wife’s unquenchable thrust to learn as much as possible about ADD & OCD.

Quick Question - Great ADD Magazines?
Does anyone know of good magazines the specialize in ADD? We subscribe to ADDitude Magazine (http://www.additudemag.com/), which is great , but we’re interested in others publications. (We have a small library of ADD/OCD books - -but magazines are wonderful to give to teachers and other parents.

Hi Bob,

Welcome to the community and for posting. I went online looking for some other ADD magazines, but surprisingly there are very few. I did come across one that CHADD puts out called Attention Magazine. Here is a link http://www.chadd.org/Content/CHADD/AttentionMagazine/default.htm.

I think all you have to do to get this magazine is to sign up with CHADD. It is only put out six times a year but from what I have seen on the CHADD site their information is good. I’ll keep looking and let you know if I find anything. Something else you might try is to sign up on various ADD websites that put out a monthly e-newsletter. As much as I hate having my inbox full of mail I have signed up for some newsletters for my children (especially my son) and have read some great information that I can print off if I want.

I am like your wife in that when my son was diagnosed with sensory processing disorder I wanted to read everything I could get my hands on. I went to the library and checked out books, went online looking for resources and online forums for parents, etc. The way I look at it what better way to help my children than to educate myself. Hopefully someone else in the community will have a good suggestion for you. Welcome again to the community smile

Great video. Thanks for posting. Although neither of my kids have been diagnosed with ADD, I think that the tips they provide to help children and parents navigate their routines are very helpful regardless. Perhaps I’m just naturally inclined towards structure but I know that my kids respond when when they have a routine and when distractions are minimized so that they can focus.
