The news that I find regarding Alzheimer's is often negative: describing the degenerative symptoms, new possible causes and the increasing risk of the disease, and other more specific stories of lost patients and difficulties affording care and funding. As Health Activists it's important that we keep up with the news and engage with our online communities about burgeoning discussions from the media down to personal stories. With something as complex and devastating as Alzheimer's - no news is too small and no question or struggle too insignificant. But today, instead of discussing some of the (possibly) unhappy news you've heard lately - let's discuss the stories that keep you going.
Whether you're a caregiver that's experienced a breakthrough or realization with your own loved one or have recently seen something inspiring or promising in your life, in your communities, or on the web - let's share those here.
For example, I was reading through Alzheimer's news when I came across the local news story out of Colorado Springs about Martha Michel, an 88-year-old woman who lost her husband to Alzheimer's but continues to celebrate his memory by walking the perimeter of a pond that borders the Alzheimer's care facility where he lives. Since 1997 she's walked over 10,000 miles. She serves as an inspiration to her local community, the facility, and, I think, anyone who is a member of the collective Alzheimer's community. Though it's a simple story, I personally found it inspiring and who doesn't need a pick-me-up once in a while?
