Hi Autoimmune Arthritis Man!

You seem to like scare tactics, Doc.  That article - which most of us can only read the directly linked part, not the discussion - speaks of an elderly gentleman.  As in ONE.  The article then contains the cryptic word "again".  So are we talking two? three?  Furthermore, Pradaxa is an anticoagulant, not a pain medication as your post sort of implies.

This (the incident mentioned) may be hinting at anything from something to warrant keeping people at notable risk of falls off the medication or to merely more strongly word a warning or two.   It was a horrible situation for the man discussed and his family, but it's impossible to draw any statistical - i.e. risk - conclusions from ONE story even one story using the word "again".

Finally, what even your post fails to consider is that the problem isn't always the patient or the medication.  It's the doctor.  Many doctors fail for varying reasons (in my experience, it's often a mix of arrogance and/or incompetence) to truly consider the situation of the patient, the condition of the patient and the proper use and risk of the medication.  This leads to things ranging from improper assessment and diagnosis of the patient to failure to properly use a medication or to argue that a known side effect "cannot" occur.

So don't think I'm taking any sides other than a learned (from my college statistics professor) pet peeve of misuse/abuse of statistics.

Hello All! I'm new and want to introduce myself. I have 3 autoimmune diseases. (severe RA, moderate Lupus and Sjogrens) I live with severe pain, primarily due to the severe RA, so I'm very pleased to be here with you. I hope to learn a great deal from you and to also share what I've learned and continue to learn daily.
(((HOPE))) for a pain-less/pain-free day for all of you!

IMPORTANT Clinical information for anyone suffering chronic pain, fibromyalgia etc:

Got pain? Beware of Pradaxa. This report raises very important clinical management issues and thus caution is needed in any group of patients who are at high risk for falling. Two such groups that are generally unappreciated by the medical community are: 1. Chronic pain sufferers. Pain itself is a risk factor for falling and those who suffer falls have randomly distributed injuries including trauma to the head and face. Normal protective reflexes do not seem to play a role in preventing head injury (not necessarily brain injury) in these patients. These falls affect people with pain regardless of age and chronic pain is generally a disease of people in their 30s and 40s. 2. People with chronic lower back disc degeneration may be at particular risk for falls. For instance the "vacuum disc", a radiologic sign of advanced disc degeneration, is most likely a risk factor for sudden uncontrolled falls. Pradaxa should be prescribed with great caution in these sub-populations.

Thank you so much Rosie for the information. So many people in this society truly don't realize what we as Chronic Pain sufferers go through on a daily basis. There definitely needs be a change...

women & pain I got this video via the American Pain Foundation.  It talks about how one thing exposed at the HELP committee was that women tend to be discriminated against in pain treatment (ours is taken less seriously and less likely to be as aggressively treated).  They also kind of talk about what to do if it happens to you.  Just thought some of you might be interested if you didn't get the link directly.

Glad they diagnosed it but sad that it took so long. Hope the treatment goes well, but it usually requires surgery. If you are a sports fan Alex Rodriguez, star 3rd baseman for NY Yankees, had this problem treated surgically about two years ago. Back to playing again. Diagnostic injection to see if anesthetic reduces pain significantly would be useful.

Good thing they did the MRA.  Turns out that all this time, my hip pain has been due to a torn hip labrum.  No wonder they couldn't find anything with just x-rays.  So an injection tomorrow starts the process of figuring out what to do with the hip.
