I've been feeling abit down in the dumps these past couple months - it began when I lost my job. My girlfriend says I should see a psychiatrist and get on anti depressants but I don’t think theres anything unnatural about being unemployed and bummed out. Is she over reacting, or is there actually some base for her concern?

Hi Smacky. I'm sorry that you've been feeling down lately. But I hope it is a comfort to know that you are not alone. Nearly everyone goes through some sort of depression in their lives. But this is not to trivialize what you're going through, which is unique to you. Everyone experiences depression differently. Being unemployed is an extremely taxing experience for anyone and it's definitely something that affects a lot of people especially lately.

With all the research I've done about depression, there is a likelihood you could benefit from anti-depressants - but they aren't the first place to start. I would recommend seeing a counselor, therapist, psychologist first and having a conversation. You might benefit from talk-therapy, as many people do. (Even those who are prescribed medications likely still use talk-therapy as medication is not a magic fix-all.)

WEGO Health has a lot of great sources to help you learn more about depression. You might want to take a Depression Quiz to get an idea about your symptoms vs. those of depression. (Remember - online tests aren't meant to take the place of actual diagnoses and you'll need to see a doctor for that.)

This website is a great resource for depression. Check out the What Does Depression Feel Like? page, What Depression is and is Not (this might help you sort through what you're feeling compared to depression)?

Good luck with everything!

Hi - I agree with you. It would be a good idea to make sure you have great exercise DAILY (make that your job) as all sorts of amazing positive things happen when the endorphins kick in. Vit. B may help and it may sound "out there" but positive thinking (DO NOT ALLOW negative thoughts to prevail) is the fundation for feeling good. Make sure yo socialize.
Meds - AFTER you have done all these things regularly for three weeks. Good luck.

Hello Smacky: I totally agree with Amanda on this one. It depends on how you handle the depression as well. If it's getting in the way of your normal life activities, then seek help from a counselor or psychologist and see what they think.
