I have been reading with interest people who say alcohol helps their dystonia . If it works more power to them. Ironically my neurologist asked me if alcohol helped improve my symptoms. Now for the question.... I understand how alcohol effects the nervous system because of my professional training as part of my job but the other day we had company over and I had a couple glasses of wine well that night I was twitching and shaking all over and afraid to take any medication because I had the wine. Needless to say it was a long night. Any ideas? It wasn't the first time in my life I had wine even though I generally don't drink on a regular basis. Just curious if anyone else has had this happen or has any ideas....
Thanks

Sue,

In the beginning, I tried a little wine to see if it would help with the pain. But, the effects were very temporary if any. So, I really haven't had any alcohol in probably over 9 months. Plus, with my stomach issues, it's probably not a good idea.

I'm glad you didn't take your meds with it. You just never know about the liver and intereractions, etc. There are some who do drink with meds. I just don't think it's a good idea. (Every now and then at the most).

It would be nice if there were some pain meds out there that didn't cause side affects and didn't cause drowsiness. I'd be the first in line (LOL). Then, we wouldn't need the alcohol...

Why yes, thank you.

so you had wine and within 4 hrs you still needed the medication? Id say forget the wine.

I am alcohol responsive. Before my dystonia I hardly drank because of losing a fam member to alcoholism... but I read about myoclonus, had many of the other symptoms.. had tried muscle relaxers, artane, and klonopin with lil help... and said.. Well what do I have to lose?

In my case it WORKED. but for only 3 hours. 2oz of liquor or a full glass of wine and my body completely forget I have dystonia. I am still terrified of alcoholism so I dont consider this a permanent solution... just a quick temporary fix. Full range of motion for 3 hours.. great for when i do photo shoots :P

My understanding is that most dystonics DO NOT have such dramatic effects from alcohol... if its not going to help you.. why bother running the risk of drug interaction or dependency?

I REFUSE to drink every night.. just like I refuse to take klonopin daily. I think both are harmful to my body, and I only do either if
a. my abs are spasming so hard I cant eat
b. I am in extreme pain
c. I have to leave the house and I cant stand up (from abs)
--and its one or the other THAT DAY--

Otherwise I grab my cane or go lefthanded until the spasms calm down.

Drinking a couple of Smirnoff Ices DOES help me. I was attacked on this board not too long ago for the mere suggestion, but I'm one of the people a bit of alcohol does help for sure! Sometimes just one drink is enough to break a nasty spasm cycle!

I have medications that say do not drink on the warnings. My prescibing Dr. even made me to sign a contract that says i will not drink. I have heard thoe that they say a glass of wine helps to relax a person.DId you ask your dr. suej? Are you takeing medicines that say do not mix with alcholhol?Maybe during your professionl training ask for grape juice or if it is white wine ask for water with 7up so it is fizzy .It doesnt sound good to twitch all over from drinking wine. : ( Take care sue j

it helps me, mine not treated or on mymedical files YET. when it cramp very bad, sometime i even paralize, use beer, have wine cooler keep around & always make sure something brought in. the beer relax more and faster, including my muscle and ligament damage under neath th dystonia still left untreated as well.

if u google dystonia and oprah u will see show, I have that kind and also myoclonic i have convulsions daily. I don't drink often as I have ME./CFS and Hep C. I have been left with out medications for it just clonzapam and not formally on records.

and I dont' need much to uncramp, couple beers sometimes one. the coolers don't work as fast. the lady on oprah uses wine throughout the day for her dystonia and pain, I do too and she is on medications and botox, all i have is clozapam given for seizures that prior weren't even on my med records.

you aren't saying what kind of dystonia u have either, they are quite a few.

best to u
