Great, thanks!! I will definitely try them (I do all these leg exercises and never do anything for my calves ...)

Oops Crazy me. I forgot to suggest some cool links on calf exercises. 2 I specifically like are:

I hope it is relevant.

Hi Mamta Singh -- thanks for the great input. I've noticed that my calves can tolerate more as I've lost weight/become more active (they used to start hurting just a few minutes into a walk). I just invested in a good pair of running shoes that were fitted for me, which should help. But I think extending the warm-up could be the key ... truth be told, I KNOW I don't put enough time in there!!

Hi Ericalee,

Stiff calves are a pain, quite literally! I think the best place to begin would be to check with a physician and rule out lower back issues, hamstring length, the beginnings of varicose veins or any other condition which is better caught earlier than later.

If it is just a case of simple stiffness - a longer warm up will help. One that uses the same muscles that you plan to use in the main workout - so longer walking if it is running you are going to do. A longer cooling down will also help - it will enable oxygen to flush out pyruvate before it turns into lactic acid which may cause soreness and tightness.
Running warm water and cold water alternately on the calves after a workout will also help as will topical applications to relax muscles. SPorts massage almost always helps.
In the long run, it may have to be a case of building stronger calf muscles (improving tissue, fat and muscle composition and texture) through specific calf strengthening exercises.
Hope some of this helps you. I have suffered plantar fasciitis at one point that took forever to go and then shin splints at another point. It can be so frustrating for any runner. It got me to look into things I never would have including foot pronation and posture while running and lower back issues...
Do share what you think is the way out for you...

I went to the gym yesterday and did a scaled-back weights workout to avoid re-injury; am trying to bump up my jogging during treadmill walks. Any tips for avoiding tight calf muscles while jogging? I do warm up, but maybe not enough...

Sarah's Tweets (from Twitter) say she's still waiting to be picked up and taken to the Hosp (West Coast Time). I'm keeping her in my prayers!
