Question for a friend.  I know someone who's in the notorious gap between getting SSDI and being eligible for Medicare.  The local state has declared that they're eligible for Medicaid - but not until they've made the maximum ($3000 every six months) spend down.  During this time are they eligible for Patient Assistance Programs?  Any one know?

I am not familiar with the workings of the FDA (being outside the USA) and found the survey informative and useful.

Just took the WEGO Health's 2011 Health Activist Survey on Social Media Promotion. It was worth the 20 minutes - I think you'll find it interesting and though provoking.

Kelly:

Many commercial organizations in the field of health care will seek to position themselves and their staff by giving them titles like "Health Advocate" or "Director of Advocacy" or similar. These are not qualifications. They are just titles. I am not aware of any formal educational qualifications that would make someone a health advocate or a patient advocate. However, one could certainly get a masters in public health (MPH) with a focus on such topics.

So for those who don't know about this, there is an organization called the Alliance for a Stronger FDA that is focused on increasing the FDA's budget so that it can actually operate efficiently instead of with about a quarter of the budget it needs. Members of the Alliance include everyone from major pharma and biotech companies at one end to patient groups at the other. So long as you don't actually work for the FDA, you can even be an individual member (which is what I am).

Kelly, Indeed in the States it is also a profession, for which you follow some kind of courses. In Europe, it is only and exclusively a volunteer work unless you are a social worker who is paid for this. In the States, it appears that several patients hire health advocates to help them navigate the med and soc ins environment, I am sure you will find a lot of resources in about.com, search for Trisha Torrey. She has a column and great resources but I am sure that just by googling you will find a lot. Trisha though knows what she is talking about.

I never thought of becoming a Health Activist or Patient Advocate. It just happened. Just reaching out to help in any way I could.

So is there an official way to aquire this designation? I ask because I got an email yesterday from a big company and the marketing lady who contacted me had Health Advocate under her name. For some reason, it bugged me.

Hi everyone,

As you may have noticed - we're holding our second Health Activist Meetup here in Boston & we'd like to know what you want to discuss with other Health Activists. Even if you won't be able to join us on the 24th, we hope you'll take a minute to let us know what topics would be of interest to you and your communities. Are there specific issues around Health Activism and public policy that you'd like to learn more about from your fellow Health Activists? - please share your suggestions in the comment section on this blog post.

Hope to see you on the 24th!
