WEGO Health

I just came across an article on CNN called "The Four Grossest Kid Health Problems." The name caught my eye so I read it. And let me say - the title was absolutely correct. Yuck!

Pinworms? Lice? Ringworm? Scabies?

Though these are reasonably common problems, they are really gross when you actually read about them. (I'm glad I didn't do an image search!)

Being a parent is tough! You want to keep your kid healthy and relieve any of their problems - but sometimes it has to get pretty gross! I thought this would make for an interesting discussion to start in this group.

• What are the grossest health problems you've come across?
• As a parent, has your child had something that had a high grossness factor? What did you do?
• As a kid, did you have something that totally grossed people out?
• What would you add to the "Grossest Kid Problems" list?
• Where do you draw the line on what's "gross" and what's not?

I feel like I'm setting myself up here, but we've been fairly lucky with the gross factor. We haven't run into anything too bad. We've had the run of the mill stuff: vomit and fecal issues (which as a parent you pretty much get used to).

Although this year at school my sons class had a big problem with lice. It just kept circulating through the class. We were lucky and it didn't touch our house. But others were not so lucky. It seemed to stay primarily with girls in the class. I think because the kids shared lockers (boys with boys and girls with girls) and the girls long hair played a role with that. But it was pretty nasty just to think about and I hated having to do "lice checks" on my kids. EWWW!

My kids are 7 and 5. I know we are not out of the "gross" wood work yet.

I came across this article this morning and thought I would share since it seems pretty interesting and helpful. It's called Treating Head Lice and it's by the FDA. The tips in here are very useful. When my sons school was having it's lice issue last year, I had a hard time trying to find useful information about lice on the web. It's there, but you have to weed through all of the snake oil salesmen to find it (seems everybody has a special shampoo they want to sell you). I even called my pediatrician and her less than helpful suggestion was to go to the local drug store and buy that lice shampoo on the shelves. That will work. But from what I've read, you may have to use it several times and you not only have to treat the head, the rest of the home too.
