Are there any moms here with special needs children who have speech and developmental delays? My son is 8 years old, and he has speech and developmental delays. He is unable to pronounce some words clearly and he often inverts words when making sentences. He is, however, making progress. But, I need advice on how the next steps (outside of the special help he receives in school)I need to take in order to get him on grade level.
My son is 4 yrs old and his delays are with motor skills. We go to occupational therapy once a week and physical therapy every other week. He has improved so much in the few month that we have been going. We were given a referral by our pediatrician to see a specialist and we are lucky that our insurance is currently paying for it. I don't know what we'd do without it.
Another suggestion would be to visit a local educational store (we have Holcombs by us). They usually have tools that you can use to supplement anything that your son is getting from school.
And lastly, check with your county. I know we have a center that gets funds from our county and this center deals strictly with all types of developmental delays and speech is one of them. It's just another option to supplement what your son is already receiving at school.
Unfortunately we are motor skill delayed so I don't have specific speech delay suggestions, but I hope something here was helpful to you.
