Amanda touched on Swine Flu back in May 2009 in her post, Cautious or Crazy - The Fine Line Gets Finer Thanks to this Swine Flu Business. Over the past few months, it seemed that we might have found ourselves in the clear, but this is no longer the case. Swine flu is predicted to make a major come back this fall and has already started to get people's attention yet again. So what does this mean? Well for anyone who's pregnant, it means you should pay attention and take the appropriate steps to prevent the disease.

Prevention tips:

Pass the hand sanitizer please. Wash your hands frequently and be sure to keep some hand sanitizer on the ready when a bathroom or sink isn't accessible. Hand sanitizer is such a life saver, especially for those of us who actively take public transportation. It's also worth keeping some sanitizing wipes by your desk to ensure that your workspace (keyboard, phone and desk) are clean and germ-free at all times.

May I please be excused. With the on set of flu season and the increased risk of swine flu this is the time to make sure you take care of you and your baby. Be sure to remain clear of sick people. Request that your friends and family keep you in mind with upcoming events. If someone isn't feeling great encourage them to let you know so you can politely decline the gathering.

Third times a charm. Vaccinations for the swine flu are expected to become available this October 2009. The availability is based on priority, with pregnant women being at the top - next to health care providers. Most OBGYN offices with have the vaccine and will likely notify you once they become available. The vaccine will required two shots and you'll probably receive a third as well to ensure you are vaccinated for the seasonal flu.

Discussion: What are your concerns with swine flu? What questions do you have about either swine flu or seasonal influenza and pregnancy? How do you warn off germs during flu season? Additional tips and resources encouraged.

Thanks for the post Vanessa!

I was just reading a post on MNN today about basic prevention tips for swine flu (or really any type of cold/flu). For me, making sure to stay really hydrated by drinking a lot of water and making sure to get enough sleep are both really important factors in (not)getting sick.
