WEGO Health

I took this post of mine directly from the old boards .... thought that we could get a conversation going here!

Science Daily recently let out a report showing HPV Vaccine Seems To Be Working and the study shows that abnormal pap test results are lower than they were previously!

I was very pleased to read that "GARDASIL reduced other abnormal Pap results, including milder pre-malignant cell changes, by 16 to 35 percent compared to women not given the vaccine."

While the cost of the vaccination is still high ($300 or so for all three shots) and it's still only being recommended to girls between 9-26 (even though it might prevent sexually transmitted oral cancer in men), it is proving to be a positive addition to our long list of recommended vaccinations!

I'm still VERY curious to see if there will be any need for a re-vaccination period after a decade or so and then again whether there are any negative side effects that come out later in life!

I wonder how the results from this new case where a 14 year old girl apparently died of HPV vaccine. While no one knows yet if the vaccine was the actual cause of death (only an autopsy will tell for certain) - I worry that this news with prevent people from getting the vaccine and that it will spread incorrect information and increase fear in people who aren't super informed about HPV vaccines, HPV, and even those who are against vaccines altogether.

What do you think? How will this news affect the medical community? What are people saying in other online health communities about HPV, the vaccine or this story?

Also - I just want to redirect people to the awesome "Will Men Get the HPV Vaccine?" discussion and to the Cervical Cancer/HPV Vaccine blog post by LaTasha.

Whoa! Crazy story. I wonder if the family chose to do an autopsy or whether it's being required because of the suddenness and the connection to the vaccination. (That will probably never be released information, but I'm curious.)

I have to wonder whether there is actually a connection though, 25% of girls 13 to 17 have already been vaccinated (that's a huge percentage for such a new vaccination ... to me) and there has only been one reported death "in connection" to the vaccine.

I'm sure that rumors will get passed around and information will spread about the relationship, but as Health Activists, our job gets to be correcting the wrong stuff and spreading the right. We're good with that though. :) I'd be curious to see what other people think about the news story. If I see any more articles, I'll be sure to point them out!
