Last week, WEGO Health partnered with branding firm Siegel+Gale to survey the general public and Health Activists on their understanding of the President's plan for health care reform.
The results were telling. Most Americans do not understand the plan. Even those who consider themselves health-savvy or pro-President Obama did not fully comprehend the general points of the new reform. You can read the full report here (pdf).
Last week 102 Health Activists participated in the survey, but it's still a hot topic and a really important issue and we'd like to hear from everyone. We want to learn more about what you're seeing online:
Do you think members of your other online health communities have a good understanding of the changes proposed in the President's health care plan?
More specifically: How do you think health care reform would affect members in the thyroid community? What would you like to see in the reform that would positively affect your community?
Yes, I understand this health care project. It is very simple actually. The government is going to set up an insurance exchange, that will be similar to the stock exchange. The medical industry is the largest money making industry in this country. Now they will be able to enter the insurance company market, along with other wealthy investing corporations and banks world wide. This way there will be no deficit, or need to raise taxes, because there will be no need to expand free health services that the government will have to pay for. In other words, those that are chronically ill or in pain will not get free health care as they hoped they would, they will still have to pay for their health care. Yes, insurance cost will depend on your income , not on your ability to pay. You will have many choice and packages that you can pay for. And like car insurance, you will pay according to your individual needs.
How does this effect people with chronic illness and pain? This insurance project is only part of the whole health care package that is trying to pass congress. The second part has to do with the high heath cost that will effect the long term cost of insurance. In order to help alleviate the high cost of medical help. There will be regulation set into motion that will put a stop ( they hope) to health care fraud and unnecessary surgeries . This regulations will make it mandatory for doctors to prove a need for a surgery with the insurance company ( unless it is an emergency) It will also mean that children under the age of two and adults over the age of 65 will find it harder to get surgeries done. Simple because of the higher risk of death on the table. People with Chronic pain and illness , will find their name on a national listing. The people on this listing will also find it hard to have surgeries that is considered high risk for them as well. So bypass surgeries may very well be out of the question.
Some will lose in this battle over health care, some will win…..
