Avoiding Breast Cancer - New Research Suggests Prevention Habits

In recent years Breast Cancer has received more attention, funding, and support than nearly any other disease or illness. Probably because of this, both awareness and attention from the medical community for breast cancer has increased significantly. And while I'm not sure which came first, both are great to hear.

One of the newest pieces of research states that "Women can cut their risk of breast cancer by almost half if they practice a few health habits, according to a new report by the American Institute for Cancer Research."

This report draws information from 800+ studies that were reported in 2007 and adds information gained from an additional 81 studies on the relationship between nutrition and lifestyle and cancer. Some tips that the research recommends for preventing breast cancer are:
• 30-60 minutes of physical activity per day (even climbing stairs or walking counts)
• breast-feeding
• having no more than 1 alcoholic beverage per day
• plant-based diets - lots of fruits, veggies, beans, and whole grains
• limiting red meat

In fact, if women follow these tips the overall number of new breast cancer cases could go down by 40% (70,000 people) each year.

I think that tips like these are great because it makes you feel in control of disease prevention and especially with cancer - we are always hearing about the newest cancer-causing product or practice. So this sort of news is refreshing.

I'd be curious to know who doesn't already follow these tips or habits, though. Would someone have to be completely on the other end of the spectrum to benefit from switching over and trying to incorporate these habits? Isn't this information just another way to say - be healthy? The article I read says that this research does not include the impact or role of hormones in breast cancer. And with so many women that are taking postmenopausal hormone therapy and oral contraceptives - I think this should be the next step for breast cancer prevention information. And I'm wondering if the statement - women can reduce their chances by almost half - means that each individual woman will reduce her own risk or if the percentage is how many cases over all will be reduced. I think they mean the latter, though the former is what is really important.

What do you think? Have you heard of breast cancer prevention tips? What do you think of these health habits? What sort of research or studies are you wondering about?

I can't recall the source, but I remember that the exercise blew the rest of the factors out of the water. Which is good because factors like having children younger and breastfeeding for up to a year are sort of really hard to do.
