More about me (my health interests and reasons for joining WEGO Health)
Hi, I’m Emily, part of WEGO Health’s team of experts. I learned my research skills doing protein biochemistry as an undergrad at Boston College, and studying autoimmune disease for my PhD thesis at Harvard University. Now I’m having a great time at WEGO Health using my analytical ability and scientific knowledge to track down and communicate the best health information to everyone who visits us. In the process, I’m learning something new every day – I love it!

Some personal tidbits:
- I'm anxiously awaiting the farmers' market season, and hope to grow some herbs and vegetables on my balcony this summer.
- I love living in a neighborhood where almost everything I need is within walking distance.
- Public libraries are some of my favorite places.
- I'm a fan of Kansas Jayhawks basketball and Red Sox baseball.
- I spent a year in Paris during college, and can get by pretty well in French.

Summer adventures for diabetic kids

Looking for something fun for your type 2 diabetic child to do this summer? A diabetes camp may be just the thing. Camps specifically for kids with type 1 diabetes have been around for years, but as the incidence of type 2 in children increases, so do the number of camps with programs geared toward type 2 diabetics.

You may be a little concerned about your child leaving home, especially since he or she has a health condition. The great thing about diabetes camps, though, is that their staff mem… Continue

Diabetes in pictures

Type 2 diabetics are sharing their lives in many creative ways, including through photography. A new photo exhibit called Meet the Face of Change is traveling to six U.S. cities this spring and summer. It features photos of individuals living with type 2 diabetes, and each picture tells the story of the lifestyle changes the subject is making to cope with the disease. Even if you can’t make it to the exhibit, check out the web site, which features s… Continue

From genes to treatments: progress in type 2 diabetes genetics

Obesity, high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and poor diet and lack of exercise receive the bulk of the blame for type 2 diabetes. These aren’t the only factors that lead to this complex disease, though. The genes you inherited from your parents also play a role in how likely you are to develop diabetes.

Genetic researchers are making significant progress in identifying genes that are linked to type 2 diabetes. They are using cutting-edge technology to compare the genetic makeup of diab… Continue

Healthy mouth, healthy mom and baby

Taking care of your teeth and gums may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about pregnancy, but it’s actually very important. In recent years, it’s come to light that oral health is closely linked to overall health. Mouth infection, especially gum disease, is associated with a host of health problems, including heart disease and stroke. Scientist… Continue

Type 1 diabetes awareness

The diabetes blogosphere is buzzing about the Raise Your Voice campaign, a grass-roots effort to get the word out about type 1 diabetes. Started by blogger Kerri Morrone of Six Until Me, the first Raise Your Voice for Type 1 Diabetes Awareness Day is this coming Monday, April 14.

Why the need for this special day? Much of the focus on diabetes these days is on type 2 diabetes, a disease in whic… Continue

I, too, love farmer's markets, eating and living well. It is a rewarding focus for my daughter and me. I read your information, Emily, as I googled,"locating an expert in teen anxiety." I came across your information and felt that perhaps you could relate and that you would be a knowledgable source. My children (ages 21 and 15) both suffer from generalized anxiety - diagnosed by a psychiatrist- 80 miles away as we live in the mountains. Cognative therapy is recommended (my husband thinks that is rediculous) and I feel it is in their best interest. Depression/anxiety disorders are in the family for several generations. How can I find someone that I think my kids could "connect with" - -like you? Is there online therapy? Would you consider that-it would certainly be a way my 21 would feel better about talking?
Both of the kids are very in to fitness :) and that helps lots.
