While reading
this article by Medical News Today today I came across an interesting statement and one that holds very true for my son:
"'Allergic rhinitis has been shown to increase the risk of asthma three-fold, and investigators found that when rhinitis began in the first year of life, the development of asthma by age 6 was twice as high as when it started after the first year,' Dr. Pawankar said".
Really…

Many who suffer allergic rhinitis also snore. It seems snoring and allergies seem to go hand in hand in our house, and I know we're no different from most others. Allergic rhinitis is well known to most people, however sleep apnea is not. When a patient suffers from both it can be a deadly combination and doctors are being warned to pay careful attention to these patients and consider closer management of them, potentially with multiple therapies and a multi-modal approach.…

I know that changes in seasons trigger my migraines. I know that changes in weather trigger my migraines. But can seasonal allergies have an affect on my migraines?
I've made it a point to walk/jog at least 3 days a week after the dropping the children off at school. I was not in the mood today and I wasn't feeling 100% but I decided to push myself to do it anyway. I decided that I would jog most if not all of 3 miles today. After a rough start, I seemed to settle into a nice pace. But I did no…

This weeks video shows Dr. Lynda Schneider of Children's Hospital in Boston discussing how the milk allergy study works and what the hope is for this program. We still get to see our man Brett in the video and we are watching him get a skin test done to see how severe his milk allergy is.
You can click
here to watch the second video.

Members of our community understand the plight of both physical and mental illnesses. We understand that so many people suffer in silence and have pain that cannot often be seen or even correctly diagnosed. We know that sometimes people are left untreated and others never find the sympathy and support they need. In addition, we've also come to realize that no matter how caring another person is - they cannot fully understand how it feels to have a certain condition, unless they actually have it.…

I've never experienced seasonal allergies in my 22 years of life, and all of a sudden I can't stop sneezing, blowing my nose, and rubbing my blood-shot eyes. Single-handedly I am keeping Kleenex in business. Did I mention my entire body is itchy and I have the luxury of waking up to ringing (and somewhat deaf) ears? Wonderful! Where did this all come from? Well, yes, May in Boston
is synonymous with blooming flowers, plants, and pollen "black-outs" (or should I say "yellow-outs") - but wh…

Like heirlooms, traits are passed down from generation to generation. Often these traits run deeper than just physical appearance or talents. The older I get the more I realize I am so much like my mother and father. From the way my father analyzes things over and over to the way my mother talks on the phone - I, like so many, realize I'm probably turning into them. A game I like to play sometimes when I meet people's family members is: who got what from whom? (I remember sitting at the dinner t…

There has been recent media attention regarding food allergy treatments and what has been touted as potential food allergy "cures". While the research being done does look promising; these treatments are still in the testing stages, will need FDA approval, will need to get insurance approval, and may not be appropriate for all allergy sufferers.
The following are two of the treatments that have made recent headlines:
Sublingual Immunotherapy: is when regularly increasing doses of an all…

According to
this article, sometimes eating certain foods (primarily fruit) can trigger the same symptoms as a seasonal allergy. This is known as "oral allergy syndrome."
"Some people who have seasonal pollen allergies in response to common culprits such as ragweed, grass, alder, mugwort (a weed) or birch, might get an allergic reaction shortly after they eat certain foods. "You may get itching of the lips, the…

Pollen is the fertilising dust of flowers. Bees gather and bring it back to their hives for food. Without pollen, plants, trees and flowers could not exist; even we depend on it.
Superior Bee Pollen is usually gathered in patented stainless steel collectors from the blossoms which blanket remote high desert regions. This ensures the freshest and most potent natural food. Make certain that the Bee Pollen you purchase is all natural and contains no preservatives, artificial flavours or colourings…

This week, I'll be speaking with Leslea about life as an allergy mom and her site
AllergyWare. If you're not familiar with her site, you should absolutely check it out. Tons of amazing resources for people living with food allergies.
We'll be publishing the interview as a podcast here on WEGO Health, so I'd love to make this a community effort and get your input! If you have any questions you'd like to ask Leslea, please leave them in the comme…

Here is my take on some new articles that I read today about food allergies.
First up is yet another posting that calls parents out on their supposedly irrational fear of allergies for their children. The article, like others before, claims that the statistics we have all been hearing about anaphylactic shock due to food allergy and overall food allergy deaths are grossly exaggerated.
When I was talking to my friend the other day about the research I've been doing on allergy and asthma here at…

Lately, I've read a few articles about how other countries, particularly in Middle-East Asia, have had a huge increase in cases of allergy and asthma. According to some sources, 15 years ago these diseases and symptoms were almost unheard of in these places. But as developing countries develop, they experience the same lifestyles we have here in the States. Urbanization and modernization of sorts. This includes processed foods and fast food, car exhaust and other pollution, tobacco smoke, new pl…

Clean is good. The word "clean" seems to denote some sort of newness, purity, and order. We've come to accept the necessary role of cleanliness in our lives. We favor tissues over handkerchiefs and antibacterial hand sanitizer in addition to just soap. How many television ads have we seen that depict computer-generated germs crawling all over surfaces, only to be removed with a brand new type of air spray or kitchen cleaner? The idea of germs is akin to tiny bugs, and the commercials certainly r…

I've spent a lot of time getting to know the allergy community since I started working here at WEGO Health. Most of the Allergy Health Activists I've worked with are primarily focused on food allergies. (
Janeen,
Ria, Sarah, and
Gab are just a few of the starts.)
Another site that I keep coming back to is…

Last night was parent night at my son's new school. Tuesday will be his first day of pre-school and I'm a mess, but not for the reasons you might think. My son has a serious
peanut and tree nut allergy. For the last two years I've watched his food intake like a hawk, from checking and rechecking food labels to harassing restaurant staff for information on how certain foods are made. I feel like I've done it all.
As vigilant as I've been in keeping him…

I'll never forget my baby boy's first Migraine headache...
He screamed, he cried, he buried his face into his blanket and his mattress. He wouldn't eat, wouldn't drink, couldn't sleep until exhaustion set in. He wanted to be comforted, but didn't like to be touched. He was 6 months old.
How do you tell a baby that the pain will go away? How do you explain to your baby boy that you're doing everything in your power to make him feel better?
It acted something like an earache, but when we went to…

Hey, WEGO Health friends. I'm hoping to harness the power of community to extend the reach of an item that I posted on my blog yesterday,
Peanut Allergy Safe at Ballgames.
Essentially, the St. Louis Cardinals (my home team!) has stepped up to the plate to host a peanut safe section at an upcoming home game. After being approached by the local food allergy support group, the are prohibiting the sale of peanuts…
