Peter Jones Hodges' model: fixed or primary care concepts - the push and pull of health & social care

When commentators, students and others write of the primary or core concepts of nursing what does this mean in terms of Hodges' model [h2cm]? For quite some time on 'Welcome to the QUAD' I have been describing Hodges' model as a cognitive - conceptual space. This suggests that… Continue

dk New Hospital Ratings Out

Hey, I don't know how many of you follow hospital reports for death rates (sounds kinda creepy, I know) but USAToday has the most comprehensive analysis available to the public for more than 4.600 hospitals. Their latest survey includes numbers for death by heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia, plus readmission rates for the same conditions. These numbers - collected by the government for Medicare patients - are a great indicator of just how high the Standard of Care is at your loca… Continue

dk Thanks for the Question, Ellen

Ellen S left a comment on my last post asking me if I had advice for anyone who finds themselves suddenly in a caregiver situation. I have been a caregiver twice in my life: once for my mom who died of breast cancer 24 years ago, and most recently for my husband, who suffered severe injuries in a bicycling accident in February. I am in no way an expert on the subject, but I'm happy to share. Let's see... 1. Ask lots of questions. Mitch had 3 surgeons caring for him following his accident. They… Continue

beka How to be an RN with a Movement Disorder ? PART 1

I get this question asked almost constantly when I am a work in the ICU. First, a bit of basic information about me. I truly never wanted to be a nurse, but due to the convincing powers of my father; I landed in Nursing school right out of high school. Art school was something that I had strived for while dodging high school biology and physics courses. But, my father would not have "one of his 3 girls demoted to the status of a starving artist". That status would belong to my youngest sister aft… Continue

amanda The Effects of Religion on Medical Decisions and Treatment Options

The other day I read an extremely interesting article on cnn.com, “Religious patients more likely to get intensive life-prolonging care”. The article discusses the relationship between a patient’s religiousness and their treatment decisions. (It also brings up interesting issues of race & religion in accordance with treatment and race & Medicare – a topic I might discuss in another blog post because it interests me g… Continue

Janeen Taking charge of your own health care and putting a team in place

In the March/April 2009 issue of Weight Watchers magazine, there is an article entitled "Build Your Health Care Team". It discusses that because of the way health care is today you will probably need more than one doctor to take care of all of your health needs. And with appointment times getting shorter (15 minutes on average) you need to be prepared for your appointments and be ready to take charge. The article breaks down what you should do into 3 steps. Step 1 is to find the right doctor fo… Continue

Amy K Don't Go Alone, To The Hospital!

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122514012478473347.html?mod=yahoo_buzz#articleTabs=article Please copy and past the above link for an important article regarding the importance of having a relative or advocate along with you, if you are a patient in a hospital. It is important to take this advice, for it is all too easy for unfortunate errors and unnecessary illness or injury to incur as a result of being a patient in a hospital. This is not to discredit the institutions themselves or the heal… Continue

Sarah Without speech, or health care options

After reading an article about the government being able to block access to women's health care that Toni pointed me to, I am honestly at a loss for words. I can't get over what the Bush administration thinks they can get away with. Why the outrage? A new possible law "... would require that any health care entity that receives federal financing — whether it’s a physician… Continue

beka Is the Nursing Shortage affecting your Care ?

As a actively practicing nurse, I am wondering if the current nursing shortage is affecting the care you receive from your doctor, within the hospital system, clinics etc. By 2010, most of us who are over the age of 45 will be seeking retirement and leaving the field. Experts assume that we will encounter a crisis or loss of over 250k nurses by 2010. No an easy number to swallow. Working in ICU has not become easier; families crowd the waiting rooms, all waiting for optimal results from test res… Continue

Jody Simpson Oral care for patients with Alzheimer's

Many years ago a friend of mine told me a story I’ll never forget. It was about a man with Alzheimer’s who resided in an eldercare facility. His usual demeanor was friendly, cooperative and respectful. However, all of that changed when started suffering from a toothache. His caregivers were puzzled by his sudden outbursts, which often included grabbing their arms, yelling and pulling at his face. Unfortunately, the man wasn’t able to properly communicate the source of his discomfort. It wasn’t… Continue
