amanda "Comfort Zone," The New Alzheimer's Tracking System, is Launched

In the past, I've discussed different ways to find and keep track of Alzheimer's patients who, especially over time, can become lost from inadvertently wandering, forgetting, or becoming disoriented. The likelihood of an Alz patient becoming lost or possibly being in harmful situations grows increasingly as the disease progresses. For caregivers, family members, and even local government and medical teams—this symptom of the disease is particularly unsettling and worrisome. Certain manufacturers… Continue

dk Combatting HAIs

I wrote a post today over on the HealthCare PSI Blog about the steps one US company has implemented to combat the deadly menace of HAIs (hospital acquired infections.) Kimberly-Clark, the maker of Huggies, Scott towels and a host of other household brands is leading the way in this battle and I thought you'd like to know about their new program. Ellen S Personal health advocates

Going to the doctor, hospital or ER? Did you remember to pack your personal Advocate? Advocates are friends, family, neighbors who care about you and want to help make sure you have the best possible hospital/doctor's office experience. Having a respectful advocate stacks the deck in your favor when you are not at your best. Advocates can be your eyes, ears, memory and voice. They are present to lend their voice of reason, their hands and their legs, and they stand up for you when you a… Continue

dk Dime Store Turtles

Today on the HealthCare PSI Blog I'm writing about another high-profile, powerful, completely ineffective agency - The Joint Commission. I have been told by numerous people-in-the-know that this governing body's function has absolutely nothing to do with its stated mission, which is to protect patient safety by enforcing hospital care standards. Oh yeah, I'm writing about Dime Store Turtles today, too. I'll bet you're wondering what Dime Store Turtles have to do with The Joint Commission. Read… Continue

dk New Hospital Ratings Out

Hey, I don't know how many of you follow hospital reports for death rates (sounds kinda creepy, I know) but USAToday has the most comprehensive analysis available to the public for more than 4.600 hospitals. Their latest survey includes numbers for death by heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia, plus readmission rates for the same conditions. These numbers - collected by the government for Medicare patients - are a great indicator of just how high the Standard of Care is at your loca… Continue

amanda Live-Tweeting Surgery

Twitter is still on the rise and in the news daily. A lot of people in our WEGO Health community use Twitter (maybe you've attended one of the Twitter Power Tools events WEGO Health has hosted?). Even beyond our community of health activists, others involved in the health community are turning to Twitter for a way to spread awareness for a cause, meet others who have similar interests or illnesses, and sharing great resources.… Continue

Amy K Don't Go Alone, To The Hospital!

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122514012478473347.html?mod=yahoo_buzz#articleTabs=article Please copy and past the above link for an important article regarding the importance of having a relative or advocate along with you, if you are a patient in a hospital. It is important to take this advice, for it is all too easy for unfortunate errors and unnecessary illness or injury to incur as a result of being a patient in a hospital. This is not to discredit the institutions themselves or the heal… Continue

Jody Simpson Time to step it up and take notice

I've written about a handful of health related topics here at WEGO Health, but nothing as infuriating as the story of Esmin Green. Many of you have probably heard about Ms. Green by now. She's the 49-year old woman who was left to die in the emergency room at King County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, on June 19. Apparently, Ms. Green's pastor called 911 and had her admitted (involuntarily) to the psychiatric emergency room at King County Hospital, where she waited almost 24 hours for treatment… Continue
