Verbena officinalis (aka common Verbena, Vervain, Enchanter’s Plant, Herb of the Cross, Pigeon Grass, Simpler’s Joy, Juno’s Tears, etc and used interchangeably here) is a perennial plant/flower which was introduced to North America and now grows wild. Twitter is still on the rise and in the news daily. A lot of people in our WEGO Health community use Twitter (maybe you've attended one of the Twitter Power Tools events WEGO Health has hosted?). Even beyond our community of health activists, others involved in the health community are turning to Twitter for a way to spread awareness for a cause, meet others who have similar interests or illnesses, and sharing great resources.… Continue
I often try to stay away from politics on my blog because I am not here to debate political with anyone. I am however, driven to find new ways to reach the medical community and the services around it. Quickly rising to the number one killer in the United States is obesity. I, for one, was almost a statistic myself. I believe we have a fundamental flaw in our thinking about health care. It is we are trying to say health care is only dependent on the availability rather than the quality. Somehow… Continue
There are no known cures for the common cold, but many plants and healing herbs can be used to soothe symptoms of the cold or flu. Science has now shown that remedies known from folk medicine can calm cold symptoms and even speed healing.
Andrographis:
Andrographis (Andrographis paniculata) is used in Ayurvedic medicine, part of the Hindu folk medicine from India. Traditionally used to treat upper respiratory infections and sinusitis, Androg… Continue

New information is out on a totally new drug currently in trials, and so far it's looking good.
In a double blind, placebo controlled trial of 20 people, the drug dubbed NGX426, (an oral form of Tezampanel) was well tolerated in healthy males and females who were dosed once daily over five days. Hope is that someday it will be approved and found useful for several conditions including chronic pain... especially Migraine.
Earlier studies indicated that the injection or IV versions of the drug s… Continue

Nasty winter weather is here for many of us. This means many things: incredible beauty, lots of family time indoors, and the bonding opportunity to be stuck in your home for a day or two without electricity or heat.

I just found this hilarious video on a pain group I belong to called the Living Whole with Chronic Pain Network. I wanted to share it here. Be sure to watch it until the end. (Anyone remember The Flying Nun TV show?)
Hallelujah Nuns!
"Patch" Adams declared that the best medicine is friendship, but laughter surely comes in a good second!

Ketamine is being aggressively used in Germany in an unusual way-- inducing coma for an extended period of time, allowing the CNS (central nervous system) to 're-boot' in chronic pain patients. As a result, those able to afford the treatment are going overseas in an attempt to find a way to make living bearable, because the United States forbids the induction of a coma lasting longer than 2 days.… Continue
I'll never forget my baby boy's first Migraine headache...
He screamed, he cried, he buried his face into his blanket and his mattress. He wouldn't eat, wouldn't drink, couldn't sleep until exhaustion set in. He wanted to be comforted, but didn't like to be touched. He was 6 months old.
How do you tell a baby that the pain will go away? How do you explain to your baby boy that you're doing everything in your power to make him feel better?
It acted something like an earache, but when we went to… Continue
A brand new drug on the horizon promises a new way at looking at Migraine treatment without some of the side-effects of Triptans.
Triptans are standard abortive therapy for Migraine. One of the first medications actually targeting Migraine, Triptans are not without side-effects however. Some of the most widely reported side-effects include cardiovascular issues such as racing heartbeat and chest pains. Merck's new drug, formerly known as MP-974, now known as Telcagepant appears to have all of t… Continue

The FDA has just issues a warning and press release about a single lot of morphine sulfate 60 mg extended release tablets (Ethex Lot No. 91762) due to a report of a tablet with twice the appropriate thickness. Only this one lot has been recalled. The recall is the result of the discovery of a single tablet reportedly twice the normal thickness and containing perhaps twice the normal amount of medication, which could be deadly should the mistake not be noticed.
Though the difference in th… Continue
