Steph Rice Emotional Eating Part 1

Having spent a number of years personal training many women and researching the reasons why we become overweight. I discovered that there is one constant reason why women regularly gain weight (and find it difficult to stop) and that reason is Emotional Eating. It is evident that women tend to stuff down unwanted emotions with chocolate, cakes, ice cream etc. It is a fact that emotional eating is one of the biggest causes of weight gain today… I want to help you become fitter… Continue

Sarah An Introduction to the Stages of Grief

Yesterday I lost one of my heroes to liver failure and old age. Yesterday I sobbed poolside with a friend repeating "It's not fair" over and over again. I know our heroes don't live forever, but I can't stop saying "it's not fair." Russ had been sick for about a year now, but only within the last six months did it become serious and scary. Everyone near him has been dealing with preparatory grief but it doesn… Continue

Sarah Five Weeks Tomorrow - post surgery update

Tomorrow marks five weeks post-surgery and you know what? I'm better. Sneezing and coughing still hurts, but even laughing hard doesn't cause me TOO much pain anymore. Thank the LORD because I laugh a lot. I am fully off the pain medications although I still am taking half a muscle relaxer a night (2.5mg) so that my abdominal muscles don't twitch around the sutures too much. I sleep better, too. Doc says there's a very LOW chance for addiction to it so I feel safe with it. Mentally and emotio… Continue

Sarah Surgery Update :: On the mend

I had my surgery on Tuesday. It was more complicated than the doctors mentioned that it would be, but I'm recovering. Right now I have two 3/4" and 1" incision on my stomach along with three "French knots" where the mesh is attached through the abdominal wall. I didn't realize that the mesh was going to be attached all the way through my body and so my abdominal muscles are MUCH more tender than I thought they'd be. I've pretty much been out of commission since then. I've been sleeping a lot,… Continue

Sarah Umbilical hernia facts

1. I have one. That's a fact. A CT scan from last Thursday shows it. *fun* 2. Umbilical hernias are due to weaknesses in the abdominal muscles around the belly button. 3. Umbilical hernias are most common in women, especially during or after pregnancies. 4. Umbilical hernias themselves are not dangerous, but the risks that surround them can be. (It can get trapped, cutting off the blood supply to the area around it. It can also grow large enough to block the passage of intestinal matter.) 5. Umb… Continue

Sarah What to do when you know you don't know

My friends (and a few family members) have started asking me if I'm ready for my cross-country move. I've been honest lately and admit; "I'm not." I still have a house-full of stuff in Portland, Oregon. I haven't looked at getting a new more trust-worthy car to drive me there. I'm only halfway into the house-hunting/roommate-possibility adventure. I have no job lined up. All these people want dates and times and routes and commitments and I keep having to tell them "I don't know," or "it's all… Continue

Sarah Whining about nothing

It's officially the second week of December, it's the holiday season and I'm stressed out about something ... but don't quite know why. Not knowing why makes me feel ridiculous, actually. I only have two Christmas gifts left to buy - an Ove Glove (for mom) and a CD (apparently Tool or Nickelback for my dad ... no accounting for taste in a man who used to love Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac and Tom Petty). That's it. I hate shopping so… Continue

Sarah Ten things that make me anxious

1. college football ... especially when it's down to the line and the game decides Rose Bowl berths and Pac-10 number 1 rankings ... Go Oregon State Beavers!!!! 2. money - when my finances are tight I get anxious 3. the telephone - I am not a phone person. Let's talk in person or through email. It's as instant as the phone anymore. 4. hearing my voice on video - does anyone actually like this? 5. dating - hence why I haven't been on a date in a year 6. singing in small groups - I can carry a tun… Continue

Sarah My Five Joys

Two weeks ago at a bank staff meeting (I work as the vault teller for a Pacific Northwest bank) the branch manager shared a cool story about an Oregonian woman learning to deal with her breast cancer diagnosis. Instead of dwelling on the negativity that most cancer diagnoses bring, she opted to focus specifically on the joys in days. She brought a journal for the sole purpose of writing down five joys a day, and at the end of her journal she was able to go through and remember all of the positiv… Continue

Sarah Barometric pressure, vitamins and 10K steps-a-day

I live in the Pacific Northwest. We have ALL sorts of weather. Take the past 24 hours for example. Yesterday it was 100 degrees. It was the hottest day of the year and it was almost miserable. Right now? It's pouring down rain - like buckets as though it were the middle of December. Mind you, it's also a thunder & lightning storm, but it's POURING. The weather changes oftentimes wreak havoc on my migraine thanks to… Continue

Sarah And they're back ...

... unfortunately, migraines have begun plaguing my life again. I went through almost three years where I had maybe six migraines total. That was an amazing time in my life - I went from six migraines a month, to two a year - talk about a change. Over the past year, though I've noticed that my migraine patterns are changing again. I thought that it was the stress of the earning another degree, but school has been out for over a week now, and I've developed (and fixed; thank you Midrin) two migr… Continue

Kenneth Gene Dockins Timeless How-To-Lose-Weight Tip

It remains no surprise that you may find yourself constantly struggling to lose undesired weight. And, there are three primary reasons for this: One... The human body desperately clings to its innate design to store the excess, unused foods you eat. Two... Unfortunately, American grade schools and high schools teach no class called, HOW TO CONTROL YOUR BODY FAT. Therefore, you grow up as an adult with far too little knowledge about what to do with the fat that has been accumulating for years o… Continue

Ellen S Hair loss and migraines

There are lessons to be learned in everything that we do and in everything that we experience. Sometimes the lessons are learned by us, and sometimes they are taught by us and learned by those around us. Sometimes it's both. This post is personal and given as a response to those who have written me online and off about my hair loss. (… Continue
