Explaining things to children isn't always easy. Sometimes you have to sacrifice telling the whole story as you understand it, in favor of reaching an understanding with them. But, as you've probably experienced personally, children are extremely perceptive and honest about their feelings.
When talking to children in your life about health, have you struggled? What techniques did you use that worked? How much detail did you share? What did you purposely leave out or "soften" when talking t…

Alzheimer's is such a common disease, but one that we know little about. Current treatments scarcely impact the degenerative symptoms and the brain plaques and "Alzheimer's gene" that are both attributed to the disease provide only so much information. However, everywhere you look, it seems there is a new regimen, food, mineral, or brain exercise that can reduce your risk.
What Alzheimer's prevention, reduction, or combative remedies have you heard of? What are others in your community di…

Support is such a vital component of infertility. It's what keeps us all sane through the treatments and the tears. Sometimes the most important thing you can do is to determine the type of support you need and from whom.

I am currently reading "
Pushed" by Jennifer Block. It's a truly amazing book that provides a raw look at modern day maternity care. As a society, we are increasingly focused on deadlines, schedules and preparation and in the United States, the act of birthing a child is no exception. Women are increasingly induced, having their water broken and scheduling cesarean sections. Have we forgotten how to let nature run it's course - or is the…

Amanda touched on Swine Flu back in May 2009 in her post,
Cautious or Crazy - The Fine Line Gets Finer Thanks to this Swine Flu Business. As Amanda points out, swine flu mania caused quite a stir and the media had a field day. It became difficult to determine fact from fiction and it was challenging for most…

Who doesn't love getting a massage? Well a study conducted by the University of Miami just gave pregnant women plenty of more reasons to head out to the spa or to their favorite massage therapist.
The University of Miami invited 149 women between their fifth and seventh months of pregnancy to one of its many research labs and split them into two groups. One group totally lucked out and got two complimentary massages every week. Massages in the name of science.
The pampered mothers-to-be had…

Now that the nausea is beginning to subside you may find yourself a bit more snacky than usual. It's great to graze throughout the day, but the trick is to ensure that you're snacking on the right stuff. While Twinkies and chocolate might sound more than appealing - here's a no fail list that always seem to offer me maximum snacking options that are satisfying, healthy and soothe a variety of cravings from salty to sweet.
One of my biggest life (and time) savers has been keeping a staple set of…

Finding the right exercise mix can be incredibly tricky - and let's face it you probably aren't really in the mood to exercise, especially if you're in your first trimester. Those first few weeks - or even months - you feel like doing nothing close to exercise. In fact, getting to and from work, running out to do errands and simply staying awake probably seems like enough exercise for one day.
It goes without saying that exercise (light exercise that is) is an important part of every pregnancy…

When my son was first diagnosed with food allergies, I had absolutely NO experience with allergies whatsoever. No one I knew had food allergies. I was so scared and so overwhelmed. It is hard to believe that just 3 years ago there was very little information about food allergies on the web. Today, information is everywhere. But how valid is it? In the beginning it's hard to sift through fact, fiction and voodoo. And believe me, it's all out there. The following is a list of books that I have fou…
