Hey fellow healthcare activists! I've been following the story of wrong site surgeries at Rhode Island Hospital; the state finally took action this week, but will it make any difference? I'd love your take. You can read what I wrote on the subject here on Wego in this blog's left column, or
click here to read the post at HealthCare PSI.
As always, your comments are welcome…

Twitter is still on the rise and in the news daily. A lot of people in our WEGO Health community use Twitter (maybe you've attended one of the Twitter Power Tools events WEGO Health has hosted?). Even beyond our community of health activists, others involved in the health community are turning to Twitter for a way to spread awareness for a cause, meet others who have similar interests or illnesses, and sharing great resources.…

Shannon in the
Yahoo Migraine group posted this morning that she was concerned that having a
tubal ligation might make her Migraines worse. After having done animal repro for so long, I was interested to look into this, as I hadn't heard anything about it in the past, but am never a person to assume anything.
What I found was interesting. There seems to be a growing movem…

Tomorrow marks five weeks post-surgery and you know what? I'm better.
Sneezing and coughing still hurts, but even laughing hard doesn't cause me TOO much pain anymore. Thank the LORD because I laugh a lot.
I am fully off the pain medications although I still am taking half a muscle relaxer a night (2.5mg) so that my abdominal muscles don't twitch around the sutures too much. I sleep better, too. Doc says there's a very LOW chance for addiction to it so I feel safe with it.
Mentally and emotio…

When you work in a health care field, or in the health care community or even have a close group of friends you can talk about anything with, the subject of poop inevitably comes up. Lately, though, I feel like my personal blog entries, my Tweets, my phone conversations, my diet choices have…

I had my surgery on Tuesday.
It was more complicated than the doctors mentioned that it would be, but I'm recovering.
Right now I have two 3/4" and 1" incision on my stomach along with three "French knots" where the mesh is attached through the abdominal wall.
I didn't realize that the mesh was going to be attached all the way through my body and so my abdominal muscles are MUCH more tender than I thought they'd be.
I've pretty much been out of commission since then. I've been sleeping a lot,…

1. I have one. That's a fact. A CT scan from last Thursday shows it. *fun*
2. Umbilical hernias are due to weaknesses in the abdominal muscles around the belly button.
3. Umbilical hernias are most common in women, especially during or after pregnancies.
4. Umbilical hernias themselves are not dangerous, but the risks that surround them can be. (It can get trapped, cutting off the blood supply to the area around it. It can also grow large enough to block the passage of intestinal matter.)
5. Umb…

January 25, 2009 Surgery took place on schedule ten days ago. I now have the pump inside me. On Thursday, January 29, I will return to Dr. Lee, and he will remove the sutures. Jean replaces my wound dressings each day. The incisions look to be healing very well. There has been very little pain from the incisions in my stomach or the back. The pump is running, but only with saline. Dr. Kim will fill the pump with Baclofen on Monday, February 2nd. I have had a few Dystonic storms since the surgery…

After reading
this post about a book that explains plastic surgery to children of mothers who've had it, I was reminded of
this article about former glamour model Alicia Douvall. Douvall's 12-year-old daughter wants breast implants for her 13th birthday.
Alicia's…
