Sarah Children having children

An Australian pre-teen is about to be a mom. Yes, you read that right. A PRE-teen. A 12-year-old girl, allowed to live with her 15-year-old boyfriend is pregnant. I can't get over this article I read today about a pre-teen allowed to live with her teenage boyfriend. Not only did the mother (who has since been charged with neglect) allow her daughter to live with the boyfriend, she apparently knew her daug… Continue

Sarah At home STI tests

Doing some research today I read about an interesting option Los Angeles county is giving to about 10,000 women in the vicinity - at home tests for sexually transmitted infections. "All women in the county can request free test kits that detect chlamydia or gonorrhea infection by visiting a Web site or calling a toll-free number." Shortly thereafter, the kits are mailed directly to the woman's home where she can test her own vaginal fluids to see if she is positive for infection. While the pro… Continue

Sarah Welcome to Women's Health Week!

Thanks for reminding me, Ellen! National Women's Health Week is a weeklong health observance coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health (OWH). National Women's Health Week empowers women to make their health a top priority. With the theme "It's Your Time," the nationwide initiative encourages women to take simple steps for a longer, healthier, and happier life. During Natio… Continue

lois I have not patience left...

I have no patience left. Insert from new book... I have no patience left. My body hurts everywhere and I am nauseous. Tonight I give myself another shot of Interferon alfa-2A for my Hepatitis C. Please stop being so argumentative with me. I think to myself I’m your mom and I’m sick, just listen for once. Did I really yell that loud, she is only nine? Oh gosh, that’s horrible, I feel terrible… we both cry. I am writing a new book. I have the literary agent who will represent me. This new book w… Continue

lois Pink Ribbons Everywhere

Let me help you understand my eagerness to shout to the world my awareness of the dangers of different diseases, medicines, etc. Before my heart attack, my top-priority concern had been breast cancer (as is true of so many women). So when I went to the gym I would wear my New Balance sneakers with the pink ribbon embroidered on the tongue. Underneath my sweat suit would be my Wacoal bra (The Awareness Bra) with yet another embroidered pink ribbon. This bra actually comes with a tiny brochure tha… Continue

lois Can't shake the passion...

My name is Lois Trader. I will disclose up front that I am a guilt-ridden, recovering altruistic, need a ‘purpose-driven-life’, unrelenting on myself, superbly gifted denial queen. I am very deliberative, I do not believe in the “Secret” and yet I believe to be an entertaining kind of gal. I enjoy making others laugh and sometimes I am the only one laughing, which in turn makes others laugh. I spent too many years not laughing. Those years are but a freckle compared to the joy my life holds now… Continue

lois I did not believe it...

Supposedly 500,000 women die a year from heart disease... I read it once, but didn’t believe it. Then I died on June 6, 2003. With radiating pain in my upper back, I went to the emergency room. My intuition told me something very unusual was happening. Abnormal EKG's, nitroglycerin administered under my tongue, a lot of blood drawn, tears running down my face, it didn't seem good. About two hours later a cardiologist opened the curtain separating me from the man getting stitches, "You're youn… Continue

Sarah Uterine fibroid embolization

A friend of mine is seeking information on uterine fibroid embolization and I am getting no where in my own research! I am hoping that someone here at WEGO Health has had some experience, or knows someone who has had experience with this procedure and would be willing to talk to me about it. My friend doesn't know whether she wants to have a hysterectomy or whether she'd like to opt for something else, but she's looking at all of her options. You can read the basics about… Continue

Sarah 2nd Annual Bodies of Love

One of the blogs I frequent is celebrating it's second annual 24 hours of body love event next Saturday (Valentine's Day is *such* a great day to be in love with your body!) and looking for pictures! Angelique at Breaking the Mirror hosted an amazing day last year and shares the pictures and comments with us again this year. Even if you're not brave enough to send her your photograph for this year, I recommend you see how much positivity arouse fro… Continue

Sarah I wore my red!

On Friday, along with the WEGO Health staff, I wore red to work to raise awareness of women's heart health. The American Heart Association's "Go Red for Women Day" is celebrated nationwide by people of all types. In Boston, health advocates dressed themselves in red! In North Adams, Northern Berkshire Healthcare wore their red i… Continue

Sarah Procedure to prevent miscarriage

I read a really intriguing blog post at Health 101 about a relatively new procedure available to women at risk of miscarrying; those with an "incompetent cervix"*. Due to gravity and the ever-increasing weight of a fetus, an incompetent cervix will "give" and the baby will fall out. Miscarriages can be prevented though by the placement of a transabdominal cerclage. By opening the stomach, a physician (most often an OB/GYN) can wrap a band… Continue

Sarah The risk of early repeat caesareans

I fear the never ending debate surrounding vaginal and Caesarean births is about to explode again. Just recently a study was released showing that planned (oftentimes early) Caesarean sections (removing the baby through a surgical incision in the abdomen instead of vaginally through labor) are proving to be problematic. According to the study of more than 24,000 infants, babies delivered at 37 weeks by elective Caesarean are twice as likely to experience breathing problems, bloodstream infectio… Continue

Sarah The truth about STI rates

I recently read one of Jen157’s blog entries (“Health Alert-STDs Still On The Rise”) and since I am highly passionate about sexual education, I feel the need to expound on her entry and clarify some of her statements. Jen157 mentions that “[a]ll over the country and around the world STDs have been on the rise” but that’s not quite true.… Continue

Sarah Gaining weight? It's not your birth control's fault!

The German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care has reminded the world that "research has not proven that the Pill causes weight gain." The fear of weight gain makes many women shy away from using a hormonal birth control pill and the IQWiG warns that the fear of weight gain can inhibit a woman from making the best choice in birth control method. If you are interested in learning more about the best birth control choice for you, I encourage you to go to the… Continue

Sarah Endometriosis resources

Ellen posted a great blog entry about the connection between migraines and endometriosis and it gave me an idea; SHARE it! Her post describes the many coinciding symptoms between this common women's health problem and migraines. Quickly: endometriosis is the growth of endometrium tissue outside the uterus. Tissue that looks (and acts) like uterine lining grows on or under the ovaries, behind the uterus, on the… Continue
