After addressing the first point of the World Health Organization's (WHO) first ever women's health report yesterday; Women's Health Report: let's talk inequalities, today let's take a look at how very central sexuality and reproduction are to women's health. I mentioned …

As I have been reading the WHO’s first ever Women’s Health report, I have been surprised by the
lack of surprise that I am actually experiencing. Reading through the five main points in the executive summary, while I am angered by the data and the response to the previous, I am honestly not surprised. Unfortunately, women are still considered inferior beings, whether here in the United States or across the globe in sub-Saharan Africa.
For the next few days I’m going to try to address s…

With the recent expulsion of Dr. Michael Kamrava from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the Reproductive Science Center of the San Francisco Bay Area (RSC) has embraced the revised embryo implantation guidelines. Due to the national attention Nadya Suleman received from her six implanted embryos (resulting in eight live births last winter), the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) has changed the recommended limit to the number of implanted embryos transferred dur

Young adults, because of their proximity to research opportunities (mostly at colleges and universities) have become study fodder more and more lately. One of the more recent studies done shows that in young women, alcohol abuse, obesity and depression are creating a "toxic triangle". Reuters' article Obesity, …

Infertility isn't normally something women are comfortable joking about. I recently started a discussion about the fact that my friend is infertile, what can I do? Besides the tips and tricks that have been suggested there, I thought I'd share something that might make those with infertility giggle a bit (and hopefully those without giggle too, because I sure did)!
A
sniglet is defined as "any word that doesn't appear in the dic…

Imagine you're a newlywed living with your husband, working forty hours a week (eighty, really, when you consider his job as part of your life, too). You come home, are exhausted, share the chores around the house and still things aren't always easy. You have a dog who requires a twice-daily walk, a cat who pees outside the litter box if you don't scoop at least once a day, and sometimes your mother-in-law stops by unannounced. On top of this, you live with migraines and your husband takes anti-…

Last week, some friends and I were discussing Secretary of State Hilary Clinton's 2012 Presidency election probability; one of the topics that came up because of this discussion was the unfair treatment of women, both globally and nationally. The men in the room were among the first to remark that they weren't surprised an African American man was elected President before a woman was; they both saw the disparity in how women are still treated. The conversation soon ran into t

While many moms never worry about the size of their children, mothers of obese kids now have another issue to begin worrying about. The latest issue of Neurology has provided results that show a woman's risk of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) may be more than doubled if she were obese in her teen years. Women'sHealth.gov issued an easy-to-read statement about the relationship:

1. Are you a woman?
2. Do you know the signs of a heart attack?
3. Did you know that the signs of a woman's heart attack can vary greatly from a man's?
4. Would you believe that the signs of a woman's heart attack can also be very similar to a man's?
Let's first take a look at the symptoms of a

Most women I know have been putting on their makeup since junior high, and we've developed certain habits that help us speed up our routine, but are those short-cuts ultimately creating opportunity for harm? The government's

When one thinks of a financial depression, one can normally ascertain that birth rates will also recede; and since we've been in a "recession" for what experts estimate almost two years, birth rates have, once again, declined. Not only have the birth rates declined in recent years, a…

The only time it’s appropriate to talk about your boobs at work is during the month of October. I am about to broach a sensitive (pun totally intended) subject and know that it’s perfectly okay for my work environment.
Most of the time, feeling yourself up is not something that the average Jill encourages you to do, however, for the week of October 9th through the 16th, thanks to breast cancer awareness month, I am encouraging all of my fellow Health Activists to do just that…
