A new book is busting the diabetes myths

Learning about eating a healthy diet just got easier. 16 Myths of a Diabetic Diet is a new book that explains in simple terms that a life with diabetes is not about eating "special" foods or spending big bucks on sugar-free products. In fact, busting the "no sugar" myth is one of the basics of this book. For years, people with diabetes were advised to avoid sweets because they were thought tContinue

Athletes with diabetes can achieve their goals

When I read stories about athletes with diabetes, I always find myself feeling proud of my fellow patients for not letting their condition stop them from reaching for the stars - and becoming stars themselves. Professional hockey player Toby Peterson shares his point of view in a Denver Post interview: "It's been a long journey, obviously, but it's something I've been able to overcome. ... You just have to be a lot more diligentContinue

Metformin may be helpful for gestational diabetes

Traditionally oral diabetes medications have been considered inappropriate for treating gestational diabetes. In the past, if diet and exercise were not enough to bring blood glucose levels into line, patients were prescribed injectible insulin. But that standard of care is being challenged and changed as studies show that both glyburide and… Continue

What nutrients do women need most?

As a woman with diabetes who is also dealing with the effects of menopause, I am often struggling with trying to meet my body's nutritional needs without overeating. It can be difficult to get in all of the healthy foods that I ought to eat each day. I don't want to "waste" calories on foods that don't pack a hard hitting nutritional wallop. The folks at Cooking Light Magazine are helping me eat a heal… Continue

Gestational diabetes is on the rise

My first diabetes diagnosis was 22 years ago. I was pregnant, uncomfortable, hot and sweaty and constantly exhausted. It seemed as though I couldn't quench my thirst, but I was swollen and miserable, no matter how much water I drank. With a family history of diabetes I was at a higher risk of developing diabetes, but I had no idea. I reported these symptoms to my doctor and was brushed off a couple of times. T… Continue

Yard work really is good exercise!

Now that spring is finally here I can often be found outside digging in the dirt, raking up debris from the long, hard winter and putting down layers of mulch to help keep the growth of weeds at bay in my herb garden. Taking the time out from my busy life to get the garden and yard in shape has seriously cut into my workout time for the past week or so. I was feeling a little guilty about it until I read a couple of articles that convinced me that my time doing spring clean-up is actually time w… Continue

Life doesn't stop for diabetes

I've never considered my diabetes to be that difficult to deal with. But then, I am not currently on insulin injections (although I have been in the past) and I do a good job of keeping my condition under control with diet and exercise. Even when I did have to deal with twice-daily injections, it didn't seem like a whole lot of hassle to make sure I had the supplies on hand that I needed, no matter where I was. I would compare it with having a baby. You don't leave the house without a packed dia… Continue

The global medical community works to halt the spread of diabetes

It's good to know that the movers and shakers of the global medical community are not taking the rapid proliferation of diabetes diagnoses lightly. "Thank you" to diabetes volunteers

Former President George Bush, Sr. highlighted the hugely giving hearts of American during the Points of Light campaign during his presidency. Both "giving back" and "paying it forward" are inherent throughout all of the USA, and the American Diabetes Association is taking advantage of National Volunteer Recognition Week (April 27-May 3, 2008) to thank the thousands of volunteers who give so freely of their time and energy to help o… Continue

Is this a new hope for Type 1 diabetes?

I try to avoid getting too excited when I read about new therapy theories. It can take decades to determine whether or not a new practice will be effective or a proposed drug approved and released. So it's wise not to get too hyped up when press releases appear announcing a potential new practice that could change the lives of those dealing with incurable conditions like Type 1 diabetes. But the recent announcement made by… Continue

Is overeating, rather than obesity, the real problem?

It seems like a "chicken or egg" question, but researchers are beginning to wonder if the act of overeating isn't the real culprit when it comes to metabolic syndrome, rather than the obesity that results from that overeating. Feeling confused? Read the research from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas: "Most people today think th… Continue

A support group can be a great resource

It's amazing what a difference it makes to connect with people are dealing with the same health and lifestyle issues that can burden us in terms of living life with diabetes. Just knowing that we're not alone can be a great boost. There have been times when I have felt so helpless in the face of my condition. I want to vent or cry or even just lay my head down for a while. Nobody knows what life is like with a chronic condition like someone else who has that same condition. Finding friends who… Continue

What's the difference between one burger and another?

People with diabetes have to really work on not feeling deprived. There are so many tasty foods that we simply have to stay away from because they wreak havoc on our blood glucose readings! There are some foods that are "red light" foods for me. I simply cannot eat them at all or I live to regret it. But I've been reading an interesting blog called Eat This, Not That which has really turned my thinking around.… Continue

Vitamin D in early childhood may prevent diabetes

Imagine if taking a simple supplement could change the course of the fastest growing health epidemic in America? Researchers in Finland are suggesting just that. The Cleveland Reader today published findings from a study of 12,000 children born in 1966. "Their study showed that those who took any amount of vitamin D had a lower rate of diabetes than those who did, and those who took recommended amounts of vitamin D were at an 80% reduced ri… Continue

Are higher drug costs ahead?

Every one of us is looking to cut costs in any area of our lives that we can these days. But how will our pocketbooks be affected if co-pays for prescription medications increase? That may be something that we will all face soon. A surgical cure for diabetes?

"A new, experimental surgery could make type 2 diabetes disappear in some patients. While doctors have refrained from calling it a cure, some believe a duodenal jejunal bypass may be the first step in finding a surgical solution to the country's diabetic epidemic." ABC News is reporting on this surgery. I have never heard of it, but imagine what a difference it could make to so many people if it works?! This may be the… Continue

Keeping up with diabetes can be tough

Life itself is filled with constant stressors; money, the demands of family, work woes, car breakdowns, a fridge that's empty and no time to buy and prepare healthy food. Adding the additional stress of managing diabetes to the day-to-day stuff of life just might be the straw that broke the camel's back. I feel this way a lot, wondering just how much I can add to my day/week/month without life imploding. Was there ever a time when I actually had free time on my hands? What the heck was that like… Continue

Have you tried tai-chi?

I'm always looking to mix it up in my exercise routine. I'm big on walking and I really like it best of just about every kind of exercise. But a friend of mine was raving about the benefits of tai-chi. She talked about the increase in flexibility that she's noticed in addition to the peace and calm that she feels as a result. I was really pleased to read a recent report on the benefits of tai chi in diabetes management. "In o… Continue

The FDA is studying Regranex

Taking a Closer Look It seems like every time we turn around a medication that the FDA deemed to be safe and beneficial is being re-considered. Makes you a bit afraid to try new medications, doesn't it? This week the diabetes gel called Regranex is in the news. In a long-term safety study completed in 2001, there were more cancers in people who used Regranex than in those who didn't use Regranex." Does th… Continue

Those of us with diabetes often feel like the scourge of society. After all, diabetes is one of the fastest growing health issues in the US.
