A team of researchers recently succeeded in filming the spread of the HIV virus on the cellular level for the first time.
The video shows that the virus spreads by creating a bridge between infected cells and the healthy cells they come in contact with.
The team is hopeful that this discovery will lead to new breakthroughs in the creation of an HIV vaccine; one that would focus on the proteins that create these bridges, virological synapses, instead of the virus itself.

This week, I'll be speaking with Leslea about life as an allergy mom and her site AllergyWare. If you're not familiar with her site, you should absolutely check it out. Tons of amazing resources for people living with food allergies.
We'll be publishing the interview as a podcast here on WEGO Health, so I'd love to make this a community effort and get your input! If you have any questions you'd like to ask Leslea, please leave them in the comme… Continue
As some of you might know, today is Data Privacy Day here in North America. Reading this post over at TechCrunch brought to mind all of the issues involving online health communities and privacy.
As Janeen mentioned in her excellent post, "… Continue
I recently came across a really interesting blog that I wanted to share with everyone, it's called Hyoumanity and the authors are focused on increasing awareness of "nondiagnosis" as well as discussing potential solutions.
I think this is a problem that disproportionally affects online community members. How many of us have seen new members, here on WEGO Health or in our other online homes, joining in the hope that they'll find answers, in the hope… Continue
In late December and early January, WEGO Health hosted a series of HIV Insight Groups on behalf of one of our sponsors. We had over thirty HIV patients, caregivers and researchers join us and share their experiences and expertise as members of the online HIV community.
Thanks to the time and participation of these Health Activists, WEGO Health was able to donate over $800 to amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research. amfAR is committed to furthering research in… Continue

Alzheimer's has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Though I have not yet been a caregiver for an Alzheimer's patient, caregivers and patients were part of my family's world throughout my childhood.
Years before I was born, my maternal great-grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease...I believe it was early-onset. I never met her, though she was alive and living in a nursing home until I was 9 or 10. Her condition had long since progressed beyond the point where she w… Continue

I was wondering if anyone has found successful sites that provide strong tracking tools for diabetics? I heard about one site, SugarStats on The Health Care Blog. Have any of you used this site, or others?
While I don't have diabetes, I'm interested in the different ways that online tracking tools can be useful in "real" life. When I went on a diet last year, I used the website… Continue

I'll be uploading this to WEGO Health's video collection as well, but I wanted to share "My name is Lisa" with all of you. It's a short film by Shelton Films about being a young caregiver for a parent with early-onset Alzheimer's. It's won a number of awards over the past year or so, including Best Short Film of the 2007 YouTube Awards:
Also worth checking out, Ben Shelton's Video Log of creating the film:… Continue

I know the Wii Fit has been a hot topic of conversation in the WEGO Health Community (and many others, I'm sure), so I wanted to post this article I saw on the New York Times today:
"O.K., Avatar, Work With Me"
Sounds like the Wii Fit will be great for those of us who, maybe aren't getting to the gym everyday...
I don't actually own a Wii (I'm not even sure if I could hook one up to my television!) but from the… Continue
I came across an interesting article today that was written up in The Health Care Blog about Etiquette-Based Medicine.
While I've been fortunate to have had (almost) exclusively positive encounters with medical professionals, I know that this is certainly not the case for everyone. In our community and many others, I've heard peopl… Continue
