I often try to stay away from politics on my blog because I am not here to debate political with anyone. I am however, driven to find new ways to reach the medical community and the services around it. Quickly rising to the number one killer in the United States is obesity. I, for one, was almost a statistic myself. I believe we have a fundamental flaw in our thinking about health care. It is we are trying to say health care is only dependent on the availability rather than the quality. Somehow…

I am out there reading other peoples blogs and support forums all the time. I do it for a couple of reasons. I look for the reason that most people fail to do weight loss. I also look for the reasons they use not to stick with whatever program they are working with to loose weight.
They fall into many categories and so I thought this might be a good start for a new set of posts. One of the first reasons people fail I would like to address is the information that is presented on so many fronts.…

I am always reading on how to make improvements in myself and was reminded this morning that some people need small incremental changes to begin any journey. You know the saying “Inch by Inch, anything is a chinch.” Others (like me) have to dive in and get something going right away so they can see the rewarded effort. Everyone is different in what they need.
Personally I think that is why having a health coach is so rewarding. I can customize my program or the way I work with someone to fit th…

I was talking to one of the doctors on our team last night and asked the question on how it would be best to introduce a weight loss program to a doctor who had not seen it before. What I found may surprise you a bit.
I was told that it is close to impossible to get into a doctor’s office these days. That it didn’t even matter if you where a pharmaceutical rep, you would probably not get in unless you knew them personally. She suggested that our doctors are very busy people and they don’t like…

During the recent event with the Taste of Home show I must have asked the question over 500 times. Almost every time I got a laugh and a response that went something like “Yes of course I want to lose some weight.” There were of course some loving partners that said “Yes my husband really needs to lose some weight.” What I normally follow up on after a few pleasant introductions to some very nice people was this: “Was that a want to or a need to?”
Let me explain why I ask. You see for over 20 y…

Seems this week is the week of the rants. I will get back on track this next week before I head to Seattle to work with health care professionals on the 18th-25th. With all the scare and hype over the pigs and again with the birds I felt another rant coming on. Then on our local radio station I heard these numbers to put things into perspective.
Every year in America (according to the CDC) 200,000 people are hospitalized with flu symptoms and 36,000 die.
Every year, more than 1 million people…

I normally try and keep my posts to a positive thread but today I am positive I am fed up with public policy decision makers (no one agency in particular) trying to come up with why we can’t fix the obesity problem covering much of the industrialized world.
An article that I ran across today said that it was the fault of location, lack of places to exercise, lack of good grocery stores and income level. That if you where a minority and lived in the slums you where doomed to be higher in the per…

Weight loss is the beginning of any journey to optimal health. In order to get there we have to look at your daily choices and develop the motivation towards optimal health. In his new book “Habits of Health” Dr. Wayne Andersen talks about the Primary Choices that we can develop and commit to. He explains the steps to go through.
1. Develop a mental picture of what you are setting out to achieve. After you have that picture in your mind, stop and make sure this is the result you want. If not go…

We all here the news, yet we keep doing what we want. We know the facts behind the obesity crises in our country and yet we eat what we want. We know as a country that exercise is good for us and that in our later days it will make us more flexible and enjoy life more. Yet we make the choices of the day based on what we want.
I read a recent article that said that a group of educated individuals where trying to figure out a way to legislate public policy that would help correct the obesity prob…
