The truth about diabetes

I recently took a look at the common misconception that sugar is actually the cause of diabetes, and I began to wonder about other common myths or stereotypes that might be held about type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Providing educational awareness about diabetes, the American Diabetes Association debunks several common myths associated with the… Continue

Diabetes and your thyroid

Diabetes management might be a bit of a challenge at times, and thyroid disease, particularly hypothyroidism could make things a bit more complicated. I have a close family member who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes almost a decade ago. After her diagnosis, she was able to lose a considerable amount of weight; however, despite her efforts to slim down, she packed on a few extra pounds, particularly in her mid-section. A regular checkup revealed that she had… Continue

Insulin in a pill

Major problems with inhaled insulin seem to indicate a lack of promise for this alternative insulin delivery method. Recently, in clinical trials, use of inhaled insulin Exubera was shown to be associated with an increased risk of lung cancer. Use of inhaled insulin has also been beset by difficulties with acceptance from patients and physicians. Could insulin in pill… Continue

Foods that pack a punch

I recently came across an article in Parade magazine that lists potential superfoods that just might be worth fitting into a healthy diet. Their nutrient-packed, flavor-filled super six includes nuts, grass-fed beef, olive oil, raw honey and blackstrap molasses, coconut milk and cinnamon. What exactly is a superfood? There is not an exact definition for a… Continue

A little diva style

A number of celebrities have personally been affected by diabetes, including R&B legend Patti Labelle. She has been very open about her own personal struggle with type 2 diabetes, and she even describes herself as a “divabetic” to express how she man… Continue

Spicing up blood sugar control

I like cinnamon on my French toast and even on my candied yams. I have heard that a little sprinkle makes a morning serving of oatmeal quite tasty too; however, this popular spice might add more than just a bit of flavor, especially when it comes to diabetes health. Cinnamon contains a water-soluble polymer (… Continue

The non-approved sweetener

Ever heard of stevia? This sweet herb is a natural sweetener derived from a South American shrub; however, you won’t see it sold next to Splenda, Equal or any other artificial sweeteners in your local grocery store. So how could stevia possibly fit into your diet for diabetes management and just why isn’t it sold as a food additive or artificial sweetener? Much like its approved predecessors, stevia might help persons with di… Continue

Fat on the inside

After struggling many years to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight, I’m finally able to enjoy the fit of my old, favorite pair of jeans. With the help of a BMI calculator and ideal body weight measurements, I have found that I fall into the category of “normal weight”; however, I was surprised by the findings of a recent… Continue

Don't blame the sugar

I remember my grandfather calling his condition “sugar” or “sugar diabetes.”; however, it is a common misconception that sugar intake is a direct cause of diabetes. In fact, we really can’t blame the sugar. Insulin deficiency is the real culprit when it comes to diabetes. Insulin helps control blood glucose levels in the body, and diabetes occurs when the body isn’t able to properly use or produce insulin. Take a look at what happens in the body with… Continue

Pushing past 100

Can you imagine sitting back in your rocker sipping a glass of lemonade at the ripe old age of 150? Well, Barbara Walters takes at look at just how that could happen one day. In one of her noted specials that spanned just an hour, she discusses some novel, extraordinary and traditional ways for staying on Earth just a bit longer. Check out a summary of the special. Me and my sugar

I can’t say I will be sugar-free but I’m beginning my search now, starting with great information on WEGO Health, for healthier, sweet, tasty treats. As I learn more about type 2 diabetes, I must admit my eating habits aren’t what they should be. In fact, I’m a “sugarholic.” I love cakes, cookies, candy, and even plain old sugar on a spoon! My obsession with sweets began at a very young age with my dad giving me sweats afterschool, and my mom’s passion for baking. Boston Baked Beans were my fav… Continue
