What made you start your blog?
I felt compelled to write down some of the crazy stuff that was happening because of my migraines. They were taking over my life, and I needed to make sense of that.
What motivates your writing?
I used to dream about becoming a full-time freelance writer. I was writing more than 1,000 words a day - articles, essays and short stories - and publishing on a regular basis. But since my migraines hit, my productivity really dropped, and I haven’t made any writing sales in a year and a half. Now, if I’m able to write a haiku and a blog entry in one day, I’m really proud of myself.
Tell us about Migraine Chick Comics.
When I started experiencing blurry vision and loss of concentration, I started looking for lighter reading. I discovered graphic novels and alternative comics, and became a huge fan of
Jeffrey Brown and
Julie Doucet. I wanted to create comic art like them, but couldn’t draw. Then one day I discovered
Strip Generator, where you can create your own strips, and I decided to give it a go.
Who do you admire in the migraine community?
Teri Robert. I can’t believe how much she has done for migraineurs with her patient education, support and advocacy.
Where do you turn for support?
To my fellow bloggers and friends on
MySpace. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve felt really low and a nice comment from an online friend has gotten me through the day. For medical advice, I tend to go to
MyMigraineConnection. I also rely on books like
The Lonely Patient,
Sick Girl Speaks! and
Just Fine.
Any surprises?
The support I get from others who have migraines and other invisible illnesses. When I started my blog, I felt so alone; I had no idea there were so many people suffering like me, but when people share their stories with me, I don’t feel so bad. I really appreciate that.
Can you share a few of your favorite posts?
