I seem to recall I mentioned I like to write fantasy novels... it was awhile back, but it had something to do with distracting hobbies and creative release. Which is very true. I think we all need a little something we enjoy to distract us. I do write non-fiction for migraine awareness mostly, and for the most part, those are all with a hefty dose of humor, because that is how I like my reality.

But fiction is all about escapism and I enjoy that a great deal as well. So that would be why I write it. Oddly enough many of my main characters lately have some sort of physical impairment, which I suppose is because you write what you know. In fantasy novels a writer cannot have any sort of magical system without having some sort of cost for that power... and pain seems like a good cost to me. So I thought I would post this novel, which is one I self-published recently, because the main character suffers from migraines. It came about when I was thinking of a specific magical system, in this case the ability to see and manipulate aura energy, and wondering what sort of cost that would have on a person. Obviously, my first thought was that if you could see all those sparkling lights, like some of us actually do, it might make you a tad light sensative, which would lead to some nasty headaches. Once I estblished that, you get a main character with great skill, but chronic migraines, who goes a little crazy from it... but then who does not go a little crazy from pain?

It is a little off topic for this blog though, but I thought I would post it anyway. If you are interested, the site to purchase a copy is listed. The e-book is 6.00 bucks which is reasonable, but since it is self-published it is a little more pricy for the paperback... at least until I find out if I can buy cheap author prices and sell them on my Hermit blog at a discount.
Aura Sight E-book--- the cover was obviously not done by me, but I used iUniverse this time, rather than Lulu (which is my usual for e-books)... but I do like the cover art. Totally cool.

Might as well refresh on the topic of creativity and migraines. One would think such pain makes you dumber than a brick, which sometimes it really, really does. But sometimes it makes your mind run a mile a minute. I think when all the nervous energy hits, a great deal of creativity comes with it. A great deal of ideas. I think directing this into a hobby has many positive aspects. There is the satisfaction of creating something. There is the cathartic release, in the sense you can get out all your bottled up emotions but in a positve way. I can think of half a dozen very bad ways to release emotions and fustrations, so I think if you find a positive release, totally go with that. And it is a distraction. With any sort of chronic pain, a distraction is to be very valued. Simply because to be in pain with nothing between you and the pain, completely consumes you and intensifies the experience, which we all know from pain that reaches that extreme point where there is nothing but the pain. Usually, with mild to moderate pain, I tend to read... a lot. And when I do not read, I blog or write or facebook or google. Anything to take the edge of really.

Thats all thats on my mind today. It has been a nasty migraine month, month and a half or two months... I am losing track somewhere. It is rather making me a tad cranky. And sleepy. I wish I had a few weeks just to catch up on the zzzz's. I expect a great deal of us are feeling a bit rough these days, given the weather. When they researched migraines and weather changes, they discovered it is not so much the change, or the pressure change, but rather heat, when it increasing in temperature that can trigger a migraine. I see that. I also remember how those super hot summer days are like, that totally buts a whole new edge on migraines. i have to wonder why I live in an enviroment of extremes.

That's EXACTLY why I write. I write chick-lit ... romance stuff ... and it's an escape for me, too. Most of my main characters have had an experience like mine, too (romance-wise) and so I feel a connection with my own people. It's definitely a release for me, too!

Thanks for sharing your stuff with us Nikki!

Off topic? I think NOT! This is a great post! I wish I had a couple extra bucks for the book right now, as I have a long plane trip coming and I'd love to lose myself in something like this. Way to make your 'mess' your message!! My daughter is huge into fantasy reading and writing and graphics. Hmmm, with a birthday coming up, maybe I can send some hints out to my family... :)
