Looking for something fun for your type 2 diabetic child to do this summer? A diabetes camp may be just the thing. Camps specifically for kids with type 1 diabetes have been around for years, but as the incidence of type 2 in children increases, so do the number of camps with programs geared toward type 2 diabetics.

You may be a little concerned about your child leaving home, especially since he or she has a health condition. The great thing about diabetes camps, though, is that their staff members, who include doctors and nurses, are specially trained to work with diabetic kids.

At school and around the neighborhood, a diabetic child may feel alone, and like she’s the only one who has to deal with her condition. At camp, she’ll be surrounded by kids with diabetes who are coping with the same issues.

In addition to making new friends and getting active, camps provide diabetes education, helping kids learn to better manage their disease and stay healthy over the long term.

I did not have diabetes as a child, but I did go to camp and loved it!

I think that a summer camp experience combined with natural opportunities to teach healthy lifestyle habits is a great idea, especially since the other kids at the camp will have to deal with the same issues. Nobody feels like an oddball when everyone has diabetes.

Thanks for the links. They are fantastic!
