Use this list, plan ahead and don't let Migraine rob you of one more moment with your friends and family! Be sure to read the detailed blog post that fully explains these tips and how our family juggles Migraine and Vacations...

Migraineurs are no different than anyone else. We love life, our families, and we want to enjoy our time away from our normal lives. For many of us, vacations bring with them attacks that can ruin the experience for everyone involved, giving us not only a sense of dread, but guilt and stress because we cannot predict or prevent our next attack.

…. Or can we?

A detailed article on how to plan your vacation when you have Migraine Disease can be found HERE, but below you'll find the quick tip outline for vacationing when you have migraine disease:

**Know your triggers
and avoid those that you can including barometric pressure, weather and stress changes.

**Plan your itinerary well in advance and in writing, down to the smallest details to lessen stress. Consider letting someone else plan the activities in which you would specifically like to participate during your trip.

**Plan your meals in advance and request any needed special requirements.

**Notify the hotel of special needs such as a noise free, odor free room, double rinsed linens and towels, and unscented bath supplies and chemical cleaners. Introduce yourself to the Concierge.

**Request in advance, a rental car without migraine triggering dash lights.

**Carry your migraine bag and all you medicines for a month.

**Plan to keep activity levels consistent so extra stress or too much stress relief won’t trigger an attack.

**Plan with your family for your next attack and allow them to help you.

This is great info! I've never considered going as 'disabled' but on some trips the term is almost an understatement. I can see where that precaution could really be invaluable. Super tips...!

Invaluable list of suggestions for traveling with migraine. Contacting the concierge is a great suggestion. They are there to serve their guests and usually do so with pleasure. (Don't forget to tip as many are seriously underpaid. I live in a tourist town and know many local concierges.)

I have not been able to travel until recently. Almost everything triggers migraine for me including change in altitude when I fly. I went online to find the airline's website. Searched for "disabled." I contacted the airline a week in advance. (Make sure you assemble proof of disability or get a note from your doctor. They require verification, yet did not ask to see mine until I offered.) The airlines have a special person assigned to help disabled travelers. They will assign you the best seat and sometimes bump you up to first class. The flight attendants are attentive and kind. The airline will arrange for someone to meet you at the gate to take you to your next gate. They will walk you to the head of the security line and get you through quickly. (Take note, this does not make you any friends.) They like you to be in a wheelchair (which I don't always need, but I humor them as they're just following insurance/liability policies. Come to think of it, I have balance issues on meds). Bonus -- you get to where you're going in a huge airport really fast!

I never thought of talking to the hotel's concierge either. Great tips!

But where's the mandatory wide brimmed hat, bandanna and sunglasses? ;p

Hey Migraine Chick-

Give them a try! I've never been turned down... so far anyway. Cheaper motels might have a problem with it, especially if it's just for a single night, but I found a long time ago that I'd rather spend a few extra $$ on a good place where I know I won't be miserable vs. a place built like a minefield of triggers.

Good luck on your next trip, and thanks so much for the comment!
