I came across the story of Herbie Winokur and his courageous family while searching The New York Times website for information on Alzheimer's. According to The New York Times article, "in 2004, filmmaker Julie Winokur and photojournalist Ed Kashi uprooted their two children and their business from San Francisco and moved to Montclair, N.J., in order to care for Ms. Winokur’s father, Herbie Winokur, who was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease."

The NY Times published two articles on Herbie. The first article discussing part one of the documentary film, "The Sandwich Generation" that his daughter and son-in-law directed, about the family adjusting to the daunting task of caring for a father with Alzheimer's. The film is described as:

The Sandwich Generation, those caught between their aging parents and young children, includes some 20 million Americans.

In this emotionally charged account of family caregiving, filmmaker Julie Winokur and her husband, photojournalist Ed Kashi, expose their personal lives with unflinching candor. Winokur and Kashi uprooted their two children and their business in order to move 3,000 miles cross-country to care for Winokur's father, Herbie.

At 83, Herbie suffers from dementia and can no longer live alone. Winokur and Kashi are faced with difficult choices and overwhelming responsibility as they charge head on through their Sandwich years. It is a story of love, family dynamics and the immeasurable sacrifice of those who are caught in the middle.

The second installment of the video was filmed a year after the first, and it becomes apparent that the task of caring for Herbie has become a burden on the family.

I recommend these videos to anyone interested in learning more about Alzheimer's care giving. They are hard to watch at times and it is extremely heart wrenching to see the side effects that this disease has had on not only Herbie, but his entire family. It is an informative video that just proves that more needs to be done in the fight against Alzheimer's Disease, to prevent more sad stories like the one seen in these videos.
