Not Otherwise Specified

Welcome to the blogosphere of the UnspecifiedOne.
I'm a Community Leader here at WEGOHealth, with a focus on the Mental Health and Women's Health communities (although my interest would be better described as Sexual Health). I also spend a fair amount of time doing similar work in a community on LiveJournal (it's not just for angsty teenagers anymore!), IUD Divas. The community is an education and support center for people interested in IntraUterine Devices, an extremely safe, effective and cost-effective method of contraception that is extremely popular worldwide but oddly underused in the US.

In my "real life", I am a psychology major (graduating in May) with a focus on developmental and clinical psychology. This is the source of my usernames here and on LJ: "NOS" in the psychology diagnostic manual refers to "not otherwise specified", meaning a disorder that does not quite fit criteria for one of the major specified types. For example, there are two main types of Bipolar Disorder (plus Cyclothymia). If you have most of the symptoms of Bipolar, but do not precisely match any of the types listed, you can be diagnosed as Bipolar NOS. As someone who is frequently a bit off the bell curve, I like the idea of a specific name for things that don't quite fit. So I am Human, Not Otherwise Specified. The fact that Nos refers to Nitrous fuel for street racers is merely an amusing aside.

In addition to commenting on mental health and sexual health issues, you may also occasionally find me talking extensively about body modification, complaining about the poor state of healthcare in this country and arguing the merits of medicating neurodiversity.
