Popular diabetes blogger
Amy Tenderich just had a birthday (happy birthday, Amy!) and listed some of her
biggest birthday wishes. Among them was this:
Less letting of my own blood for managing this disease. Semi-invasive, non-invasive, no more finger pokes at all, ever -- bring it on.
It’s a sentiment that’s echoed by diabetics everywhere—we’ve put a man on the moon (nearly 40 years ago, last time I checked!), we’ve witnessed amazing strides in prosthetics, in anti-virals, in cancer treatments. Why the heck are diabetics still pricking their fingers to check their blood glucose levels?
The pharmaceutical and medical device industries have been touting different semi-invasive and noninvasive monitoring devices as “coming attractions” for some time now, but the diabetic blogosphere is nothing if not skeptical. John L. Smith’s online book
The Pursuit of Noninvasive Glucose: “Hunting the Deceitful Turkey” (made available through
On-Line Diabetes Resources) echoes the jaded cynicism of diabetics everywhere who have been first patiently, then not-so-patiently, waiting for these revolutionary devices to appear.
So where the heck are they? Well, there’s the
GlucoWatch G2 Biographer…oops, looks like it’s not being sold any longer. What about Italian
A. Menarini Diagnostic’s
Glucoday? Everyone’s been talking about that. Well, I’m sure it’s great if you live in Austria, Belgium, Italy, France, Germany, Greece, the UK, Portugal, Spain, or the Netherlands, but no U.S. release date has been announced as of yet, sigh.
It’s discouraging to say the least, but with the number of companies that have noninvasive or semi-invasive monitors in development, something’s bound to turn up eventually. Sadly, it seems like it’s hard to say exactly when that’ll happen.
In the meantime, keep clamoring. You know what they say about the squeaky wheel and the grease…
