Diabetes management might be a bit of a challenge at times, and thyroid disease, particularly hypothyroidism could make things a bit more complicated. I have a close family member who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes almost a decade ago. After her diagnosis, she was able to lose a considerable amount of weight; however, despite her efforts to slim down, she packed on a few extra pounds, particularly in her mid-section. A regular checkup revealed that she had
hypothyroidism.
So how are these two conditions related and what could they mean for your diabetes management?
Diabetes and thyroid disease are both characterized by hormonal difficulties, and researchers have shown that persons with type 1 diabetes have an
increased risk of thyroid disease compared with persons in the general population. The
prevalence of thyroid disorders, particularly hypothyroidism, is also higher among persons with type 2 diabetes, and women are most likely to be affected by these disorders as well.
Weight gain, one of the many symptoms, characterized by hypothyroidism might not only sabotage your efforts to lose weight for better diabetes management, but it might also affect the management of your condition. Too little or too much thyroid hormone might also significantly impact your
blood glucose levels and your diabetes medications.
Could you be experiencing
symptoms of a thyroid disorder? Do you know your
TSH levels? Your thyroid is another important aspect of your diabetes care that you might want to discuss with your physician.
