Soy protein just might be added to the list of “
superfoods” when it comes to diabetes health. According to a recently published
study by researchers at Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, a soy protein-rich diet might have long-term benefits for the prevention of serious complications in persons with type 2 diabetes. Compared with a diet rich in animal and vegetable protein, a soy protein-rich diet was associated with significant reductions in a number of markers for cardiovascular and kidney disease.
Indeed, soy has been touted to have a number of beneficial
health effects including for menopause, cancer and heart health. The
American Heart Association suggests that the inclusion of some soy products (eg. tofu, nuts, burgers, etc) might have benefits for the heart; however, there isn’t any clinical evidence to support claims that soy is significantly better than other proteins for lowering LDL cholesterol.
