Can anti-perspirants harm women’s breasts? A never-ending discussion?

The Daily Mail in Britain recently explored the possible link between breast-cancer and anti-perspirants in an article written by reporter Lois Rogers entitled: ‘Can anti-perspirants harm women’s breasts?’ (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1160744/Can-anti-perspirants-harm-womens-breasts-New-study-links-deodorants-breast-lumps.html). Rogers explains ‘recent research has shown that women who suffer repeated appearance of benign breast lumps might be more likely ultimately to develop cancer than those who do not’. The statistics are pretty horrendous in that 45,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Rogers goes on to explain that there is growing suspicion that these lumps could be linked to heavy use of anti-perspirant products and not to diets.
A recent report published in the Journal Of Applied Toxicology shows that benign breast lumps do contain high levels of aluminium, and it is this build up of aluminium in the body that is linked to the formation of cancerous tumours and even has associations with Alzheimer’s disease.

Scientist Philippa Darbre, a cancer researcher at Reading University in Britain, states she has found ‘cancerous tumours are most likely to appear in areas of the breast nearest to the underarm area where antiperspirants have been applied’.

Rogers explains ‘Darbres’ latest research project, conducted jointly with Professor Ferdinando Mannello, of Urbino University, Italy, compared levels of aluminium with the fluid from breast cysts in 48 women, with levels of the metal found in blood samples from 30 other women, and in breast milk taken from a third group of 45 women. Where the cyst was in the armpit area of the breast, the level of aluminium present was about 25 times higher than the level found in a normal blood sample.’

The statistics are pretty horrendous in that 45,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year.

Women, as well as men, make sure you use deodorants (as opposed to anti-perspirants), since they do not block pores and also that they do not contain any aluminium salts, as the majority of regular ones do! Even if the link is only possible, you do not want to take the chance.
