As we are retired and on a fixed income, it was a challenge to figure out how to exercise. My husband had bladder cancer a couple of years ago, and I have been diagnosed with Cervical Dystonia and Essential Tremor for 10 years. I am convinced I had Dystonia beginning in my 20s, but the doctors I went to all thought it was due to my depression and nervousness.
We recently purchased a treadmill with 6 plateaus and arms to work as you walk. I have my routine of 3 days a week, begin on 2 for one minute warm up, increase to 3 for 15 minutes and then, down to 2 for one minute to cool down. I am using the arms when I walk on 3, kind of like marching. I will increase when I feel this is too tame. I have been a Bally's girls for years and have taken Karate/tae-kwon-do, also, so I am not beginning without any knowledge of how to proceed.
My husband is a hoot. He is doing plateaus and marching the way he did in the Air Force. We both live in the mountains of Georgia, 30 minutes one way to anything and hilly outside with lots of loose dogs. I am not afraid of the dogs, but I cannot afford bacon bacon every time I want to walk and a strange dog approaches me. This has always worked for me outside for those of you who walk for your health.
I will let you know if I lose any weight in the future.

I have had depression and nervousness too. But, I think a lot of that has been due to Grave's Disease and medications. Now, I have Dystonia.

I try to exercise. I am hoping that exercise will help. I also have been diagnosed with serious arthritis in my cervical spine. I am trying yoga as well.

Hi hopeful, I have cervical dystonia with essential tremor. I know I need to exercise gently and walking I feel is the best. My muscles will cease to be useful if I do not do something. Can't be sedentary all the time. I am 69 on Wednesday and retired so no working or going out a lot. My husband of 47 years is my caretaker and believe me he really helps me. I cook very little now and the vacuum is too heavy for me to push even though it is an Oreck. I need to lift weights but that is where my problem is and down my spine.

Thank you hopeful for all your projects. I am also a brain donor and I have a excell page that I keep up to date with all my health info, doctors, operations, meds, husbands work schedule, instructions for first phone call to be to the brain number. My doctors seem to like the paper and know where to look now for changes in meds. That is very important. Had a virus and every med prescribed was bad for dystonia! who knew?
