Its 2009. What do I resolve to do? Be healthier, go to the doctor less, lose weight, and get a job. I may not be very original but I think this is what is important to me. I want 2009 to be a healthier year for me. I have been dealing with my latest cancer since May 2007 and I think its time to move on. I want to go to the doctor less. Every doctor visit is a little trip around the evil roller coaster. I finally caught a three month break in doctor appointments - but ended up back at the doctor in six weeks due to a back problem that is not resolved. But a six week break was very nice. Last year I had 79 doctor visits. This year 10 would be a good number.
I also want to lose weight. I will not go on a diet. Diets don't work. Change in eating and exercise habits will work. Eat less + move more = weight loss. Psychologically I think this will help me get to the new normal. I don't ever expect to return to my previous size six. I really don't think that will happen but size 8-10 would be just fine (and I have a whole wardrobe of clothes conveniently waiting for me).
Last of all, I want to get a job. I used to work full time but was laid off just before my diagnosis in May 2007. I tried to look for a full time job during surgeries and chemo but eventually gave up and just work part time and do some contract work from home. Now I would like to continue that and add another part time job - 20 hours/week. We need the money and I think it is healthy for me to work outside the house more - interact with others. I dont want the full time work as I want the flexibility to take time off for doctor appointments and to do the things I enjoy.
I don't usually give myself New Year's Resolutions but I decided 2009 is time to move on from the cancer filled things that have dominated my life for the past 19 months. Cancer will always be part of my life now but I don't need to let it dominate my life either.
