WEGO Health

In my recent interactions on twitter I have come to know some delightful “mommies” who, like myself, care deeply about their role as a parent, from the point of conception and on. These interactions and friendships have brought a topic to mind that might be of interest to others, and in fact, it may be something that you see discussed in your communities.

The topic is home birth, the safety of home birth, the benefits of home birth and the overall perception of home birth.

I am now at a point in my life and state of health that it is highly doubtful I will experience another pregnancy or birth, but I have had two pregnancies and vaginally delivered each of them in the hospital setting. I have often been intrigued by the topic of homebirth, honestly, at times in awe and wonder and sometimes perhaps envious of the bravery of the women who choose this option. I am one who puts a lot of “stock” in medical professionals, believing in and trusting in their knowledge when I do not understand completely the human body and all of its complexities, so it is natural for me to feel “safe” delivering my child in the hospital setting.

In getting to know some of the other birthing options, I have found that there is a large amount of information out there on this topic, and it can be an often “heated” debate. “Homebirth Debate” is a blog to visit to see the different points of view, where members can participate in a forum for supporters and opponents of homebirth and debate the subject openly. I also found “Empowering Birth Blog” where the author appears to be a great believer in the homebirth option. “Pursuing Harmony” and “A Mother's Voice” both share direct experiences with homebirth and are both written by a mother and activist who I think highly of. You may find these enlightening reads, like I did. I also discovered a couple of other options here and here, for information regarding the safety issues of homebirth.

As a health activist, do the debates continue around this issue in your communities? Do you find it a more socially accepted option these days? Are there communities that you would recommend for people who are seeking the answers to these questions?
