When I read stories about athletes with diabetes, I always find myself feeling proud of my fellow patients for not letting their condition stop them from reaching for the stars - and becoming stars themselves.
Professional hockey player Toby Peterson shares his point of view in a
Denver Post interview:
"It's been a long journey, obviously, but it's something I've been able to overcome. ... You just have to be a lot more diligent with your preparation. Every morning when you wake up, it's the first thing on your mind. I don't wake up and say, 'Oh, who do we have tonight,' I wake up and say, 'Where are my blood sugars? Where are my numbers at, what do I need to do to keep them in check?'
"That's just routine. Once I know that's normal, I can keep my normal routine that I've had every day in my life to keep it so that I can concentrate on hockey or whatever it is I have that day."
How about you? Do you let your diabetes prevent you from doing the things you'd like to do, or do you overcome the challenge and achieve your goals?
