Yeast Infection

This is a topic that comes up frequently in other women's health forums. Clearly we need a discussion, too!

So, discuss:
1. What factors trigger yeast infections? (antibiotics, environmental stuff, etc)
2. How do you know you have one? When do you go to a doctor?
3. What treatments are effective? (OTC, Rx, at-home)
4. Share experiences with at-home remedies/prevention methods.

interesting facts:
--many yeast infections resolve without treatment
--yeast infections can be the result of changes in vaginal pH
--home treatments with good efficacy include garlic, yogurt, vinegar and gentian violet. They work by restoring proper pH (the vagina is quite acidic!), restoring good bacteria, or actually killing yeast cells.
--Yeast infections share some symptoms with other vaginal infections, including bacterial vaginosis and many STIs.
--Yeast can also affect other areas of the skin and the mouth.

I unfortunately had a yeast infection after being prescribed some heavy duty antibiotics. Rather than going back to the doctor I bought over the counter products. I tried a cream first and found that entirely to messy. I found that the Monistat tablets that you insert worked much better for me.

I'm pretty fortunate to have only had a yeast infection a couple of times. I know so many women who have dealt with them regularly. For some women, a monthly yeast infection is part of their menstrual cycle, so I can't help wondering what impact hormone production might have on the development of a yeast overgrowth.

I've always just used an OTC 3-or 7-day cream and it's worked very effectively.

Many many years ago, I would get a yeast infection every month, the week before my period was due. It was like clockwork. I did use over-the-counter remedies, but eventually needed to be on Diflucan. When it clicked with the timing, I brought up to my doctor that I thought the birth control pill I was on was the cause. What else makes your cycle "like clockwork"? She refused to admit that the bcp could be the cause. I had her change my pill anyway and it went away.

So I definitely think hormones can play a part. The acidity and other factors vary at the different times in your cycle. The varying hormones in different pills would effect these in their own way.

I've had countless yeast infections! Finally it got so bad that both my husband and I went to the doctor together. Long story short. 1. I stopped using any types of soaps. I just use water. 2. My husband must shower before relations. We were passing it back and forth. These simple steps have helped tremendously! I used to do the the OTC and the prescription medications. I haven't had to use anything in a long time. Oh, and I also switched to all cotton undies.
