I found
this article very interesting. Like most people I have heard of postpartum depression in women but now doctors are saying 1 in 10 father's meet the criteria for moderate to severe postpartum depression.
The symptoms of postpartum depression differ between women and men. "Women are often sad or withdrawn, while men may become irritable, aggressive, and even hostile, he says. But there are no hard rules."
They went a step further to see what kind of an effect postpartum depression had on children. The results were surprising to me.
While there was no difference between the level of interaction between depressed parents and their children, the effect on the infant's development was more profound in toddlers who had a depressed father.
"The dads' behavior significantly affected their child's development at 24 months -- specifically in terms of how many words the child used," Paulson says. If their dads were depressed and didn't read to them, the infants had a much smaller vocabulary," he says."
Surprisingly there was no link between the effect of baby-mom interactions on toddler vocabulary at 2 years of age.
It is important that new parents be it men or women are educated on postpartum depression. We know the effect it has on parents. I know in my case it was the worst shame I have ever felt in my life. Now we are seeing the effects it may have on children years down the line.
