Mothers with epilepsy can take some anti-seizure medications while breastfeeding

Most new mothers worry about everything when it comes to the health and well being of their babies. Researchers announced recently that mothers who need anti-seizure medications to control conditions like epilepsy can take certain medications without fear that they may be harming their little ones.

The study will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology annual meeting, in Chicago. "The children of mothers who breast-fed while on the epilepsy medications actually scored consistently higher on IQ tests than those children in the study who were not breast-fed. However, the results were not significantly different after adjusting for the mother's intelligence as the children who were breast-fed also had higher IQs."

This is good news for both parents and the medical community.

Thanks for posting this! New mothers often receive conflicting advice about whether certain medications are compatible with breastfeeding and many times there simply isn't enough data on the topic. The go-to resource on this subject is Thomas Hale's book, Medications and Mothers' Milk (Pharmasoft Medical Publishing). Usually your local lactation consultant or children's hospital will have access to a copy.
