About me
I have been interested and worked in healthcare for the majority of my professional career. I worked 5 years for a psychiatric hospital, 7 years for a cardiopulmonary manufacturer, and the past two years as an editor of medical transcription.

I have a personal interest in many areas because of friends and family being diagnosed. Some of those conditions are ADHD, Epilepsy, MS, Sensory Processing Disorder, Retinitis Pigmentosa, Usher's Syndrome, Autism, Multiple Cancers (Lung, Breast, and Colon), Heart Disease, and Diabetes.

I am active within several communities. Some of them include BabyCenter where I was a host, two epilepsy boards and several lung cancer boards.

Online child safety - How are you addressing this with your children?

This question is one that has many differing opinions as to what is best. It seems like now a days parents are able to control or "spy" on just about any activity their child takes an interest in. Computers now have parental controls that can either block sites completely or give parents a report on what sites their children have been visiting. Unfortunately there are ways around the system. In the not to recent past a young girl comm… Continue

Early versus delayed umbilical cord clamping

When I was pregnant with both of my children I belonged to many pregnancy boards. One of the questions that inevitably was asked was, "Are you going to speak with your doctor about when the umbilical cord should be clamped?" Umbilical cords for the most part were clamped almost immediately. Many doctors believed that early clamping could reduce the risk of mother's bleeding to death. Recently scientists have been questioning the risks that early clamping may have on newborns. Some recent studi… Continue

National infant immunization week (April 19th-26th)

Next week the American Academy for Pediatrics is bringing awareness to the importance of protecting infants from vaccine-preventable diseases. One of the best resources available on the AAP's website is a list of FAQ's about vaccines that are answered in an audio format. Some of the questions that are answered include, "Why pediatricians use combination vaccines?", "Why the flu vaccine is now recommended for children 6 months to 18 years?" and… Continue

Book explains why mommy is getting plastic surgery.

Newsweek is featuring an article on a new picture book that aims to explain to children why mommy is getting plastic surgery. Some of the surgeries mentioned in the book include tummy tucks, breast augmentation, and nose jobs. The book explains, "how mommy will soon be 'prettier', and shows where the bandages will be, and the finished product". The book came about after a plastic surgeon saw mother's bringing their children into plastic sur… Continue

Get involved in the fight against childhood obesity

If you are concerned about childhood obesity you might be interested in reading this PR Web article about a petition that National Action Against Obesity.com is launching against the YMCA of America. While the petition is directed at YMCA, the goal of the petition is to eliminate junk foods from ALL daycares, child care, and preschool centers. The article gives statistics that include: By 2015 75% of America's pop… Continue

Hi Paula,
Thank you for such a lovely welcome to WEGO.
I am involved with Alzheimer's Australia andon some of their committees etc.
Our DASNI quilts were a wonderful project with squares from all around the world contributed by people with dementia or in memory of some who have passed on.
They now hang on the walls of some Alzheimer's Associations to remind people that those of us with dementia can still do lovely things.
I would love to get to know more of the people on this site as well.
Again, thanks for your welcome
Warmest regards
Shirl

Hello Paula:
Thanks for sharing your comments about how cancer has touched your life. I will take your advice and join the cancer board. I can certainly use some support in that area of my life. It has devastated me and I know it has created a lot of stress for me in dealing with my dystonia.

Hello Paula:

It is so nice to meet you and I'm glad you joined WEGO Health. You have an awful lot to share with our dystonia community. I have a personal interest in Cancer. I have lost all my immediate family to Cancer and am the only one left. At times I ask my self why? For now I know I could not control what happened and have to accept it. That can be a hard thing to deal with. Presently I am taking it one day at a time. It can be a very lonely feeling. I do have my own family and one of the things I fear the most is losing one of them.
Anyway Paula I am glad you are here.

Thanks, paula for helping out with the dystonia forum. Good suggestion to the person in pain with cervical dystonia referring them to the Dystonia Forum.
How can we get more people involved ?? Thanks for being involved yourself !

Hi Paula, just quick note. I'm at a convention until Wednesday, and it's after 1 am here, and I have to get up at 6;30, but thanks for the welcome aboard and I've did some answering questions last week and intend to be an intricate part of the forum. Beka is a dear and good friend of mine, and when she asked to join this forum and add my expertise to it, I told her I'd be happy to. So you'll see more of me when I get home this week. After I catch up on some sleep. the days are totally full here, but it's a neat convention.
Talk to you later...Nancy

Hi Paula: Thanks so much for your welcome greeting. I'm trying to find my way around here, and am sure I will become an active member once I know what I am doing:) Yes, I am very verbal, but I'd rather relate the entire background of my Dystonia than just give parts and pieces of information. As I said, I take my disability as an everyday adventure, and try not to let it interfere with my lifestyle. I know my limitations and don't usually over extend what I know I can't do. There are so many variables with this disorder, and my heart goes out to everyone who has to live with such a disability. Have a great day, and hope to talk to you again, soon:)

Hi Paula,
Many thanks for leaving your very nice message. I'm not often on the Dystonia Bulletin Boards but would be happy to be there to share more of my life with others if that would help in even a small way.
I'm pleased to note that you found the You Tube informative. I've been an advocate of promoting Generalised Dystonia so that people can at least have some idea of what it involves and that it's not just some obscure breakaway Russian Republic.

Hi Paula,
You certainly have a lot of interests and I've no doubt that this keeps you very busy.
I'm a writer and have worked as many things in my life before retiring so that I could give more attention to writing and to other things. I've worked as many things, a few being, a laboratory technician, a scriptwriter for children's TV, I've worked with young offenders and have also worked with 'battered women'. I'm heavily involved in highlighting the issue of the physical, sexual, psychological and emotional abuse of children. My book, The God Squad, has been translated into many languages and is available online as well as in many good bookstores. Most people find it and buy it on www.amazon.com or www.barnesandnoble.com .
I am described very often as a 'disability activist' and have Generalised Dystonia. You might like to have a look at my website www.paddydoyle.com and my video on both You Tube and on my website. The You Tube video can be seen here:
http://ie.youtube.com/user/paddydoyle51 One of my missions in life if you like, is to ensure that Generalised Dystonia becomes better know and better understood. There's little of no information on the disability on the WWW or on the various dystonia sites.

Thanks Paula for the good wishes. Sometimes it all just gets to me. Thankfully there are good people out here that understand and let us vent when the need arises.

Hope your day goes well.
