Profile Information

About me
Hi there! I'm Amanda from WEGO's group of experts, great to meetcha! Why am I here? Well, I'm an advocate for consumers having access to accurate, palatable health information--not just the sensationalism that the media tends to spoon-feed us. People are out there building roads, building infrastructure, keeping the peace, keeping our toilets unclogged--they don't have time to sift through a bunch of meaningless stuff in order to find answers to their health questions. That's where we come in.

When I'm not working for WEGO, you'll find me putting other various snippets of health-related and not-so-health-related information out into the world. In my academic and professional careers, I've worked with topics as diverse as childhood obesity, cardiac rehabilitation, breastfeeding, and syphilis prevention.

I live just north of Boston with my husband, the fabulous geek extraordinaire Sean; my toddler, Bryce, who makes me laugh every day; and our pets--Sadie the Jack Russell terrier and Tivy and Mathilda the cats. Yes, chaos is often involved.

In my spare time (hahaha!), I love to: obsess over the real estate market, search for "the perfect" Victorian-era home to refurbish, buy too many handbags, eat too much sushi, find 'family-friendly' yet cool stuff to do around here, find ways to artfully merge my husband's Dwell and my Pottery Barn taste, travel, watch indie movies, and laugh, laugh, laugh.

My weaknesses are artisan cheese, artisan pottery, and coffee with chicory.

Ow, my wallet!

Gas prices are on the rise, and if all the predictions are true, there’s no relief in sight. The worst part is that it doesn’t stop at the tanks—as most people can attest, pricier gas brings hikes in the cost of other necessities, such as clothing, toiletries, and food. We know that farmers are struggling and that the rising grocery prices are causing stress--over half of the Americans who responded to a recent Ga… Continue

What's so funny about diabetes?

Do you remember that little Reader’s Digest humor column Laughter, the Best Medicine? Well, it seems like they were on to something. Plenty of experts have been touting the benefits of humor in disease treatment for years, and now diabetes educators are chiming in. Advanced Practice Nurse, Diabetes Educator and Cartoonist Theresa L. Garnero has a great article from Diabetes… Continue

Flying cars, Judy Jetson hairstyling machines, and noninvasive glucose monitoring?

Popular diabetes blogger Amy Tenderich just had a birthday (happy birthday, Amy!) and listed some of her biggest birthday wishes. Among them was this: Less letting of my own blood for managing this disease. Semi-invasive, non-invasive, no more finger pokes at all, ever -- bring it on. It’s a sentiment that’s echoed by diabetics everywhere—we’ve put a man on the m… Continue

Diabetic? Go easy on the eggs

It seems like no other food is as simultaneously much-maligned and much-revered as the good old incredible, edible egg. This article from popular humor site The Onion pretty accurately sums up most people’s feelings on eggs and their supposed health benefits. One day, you’re happily noshing on omelettes, the next day you’re throwing out entire cartons of free-range organic eggs because the word is that eggs should be eschewed if you want t… Continue

Embracing the "quickie"

You flop on the couch one Friday and pop that popular Hollywood romantic comedy into your DVD player (no, it doesn’t matter which one). Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy makes grand gesture to girl, girl and boy engage in an all-night lovefest that makes even your dog blush. That’s how it’s supposed to be, you think to yourself as you cock a skeptical eyebrow at your significant other. All night long! Just like all the songs say! With my apologies to… Continue

Hello!
I'm mom to a 13 month old boy who today after visiting at a relative's home with a dog and cat had bright red, swollen (non-painful when touched) ears. Any insight? Thanks!
