About me
I am a science, sustainability and health enthusiast living in a charming - yet rugged - Mississippi River town in Minnesota. Growing up I tagged along with my father as he studied fish, herpetofauna and plant communities around the Midwest. As a little girl, I aspired to become a biologist and as I grew up became involved in a myriad of research activities in addition to local conservation organizations. Along with field biology, I came to enjoy all sorts of outdoor activities like camping, backpacking, hiking, road biking and mountain biking. I recently completed my Master's degree from Texas A&M University where I studied the evolutionary ecology of cichlids. In addition to ecological research and evolutionary studies, I am insatiably curious about environmental wellness and health. As an expert for WEGO Health I aim to investigate issues that connect sustainable living with healthy living. I am committed to researching the best, most up-to-date news and information on issues including wellness, diet and fitness. When not happily absorbed in my writing and researching for WEGO Health, you might find me working out, with my nose in a book, on an aimless road trip or trying to help my incredibly patient fiance restore our hundred year-old fixer-upper.

Going green in health care

From time to time almost all of us pop a pill or two to cure the occasional ailment. Others, who suffer from a chronic sickness or take a daily dose of aspirin or birth control, consume pills daily. But have we ever stopped to consider where our medicine comes from or the environmental toll that discarded pharmaceuticals can take on the Earth? From soil quality to drinking water, researchers have found an alarmi… Continue

You are what you eat: understanding the benefits and risks of genetically modified foods

Think about what you ate for breakfast. Whole wheat toast, scrambled eggs, a bowl of fruit and orange juice. Healthy, balanced and most importantly, it satiated my hunger for a little while. But that healthy, balanced breakfast of yours wasn't as innocent as you might have assumed. Chances are, at least some of the products that you consumed were genetically altered. Gasp. They may even have contained the genetic material of a fish. Gaaaaasp. Every once in awhile, the topic of genetically mod… Continue

Nalgene no-no!

Go grab your favorite water bottle. Right now! Go! Take a look at the bottom of the bottle. Is there a #7 on the bottom? If there is, then you better keep reading! Many Nalgene water bottles and other hard plastic sport water bottles are made using polycarbonate, which can leech Bisphenol A (BPA), an estrogen-like chemical. No ladies, this estrogen imitator won't give you better skin or shinier hair. Rather, this estrogen mimic has been linked to… Continue
