Profile

About me
My name is Lesly, and I've been working in cancer research for most of my adult life. My graduate training was focused on antioxidant approaches to chemotherapy, and until last year, I'd been working in drug development.

I am currently working on a public health project at one of the world's leading comprehensive cancer centers. I love what I do, and I am constantly inspired by the patients and family members I've met through my work as an epidemiologist, a cancer blogger and a WEGO Health Researcher.

When I'm not working or blogging about health issues, I enjoy spending time with my amazing husband and two parrots. My hobbies include cruising the web fantastic, fanatically rooting for the West Virginia University Mountaineers, blogging about non-health issues, drinking coffee and eating dark chocolate.

Weathering migraines in hurricane season

Hurricane season starts this Saturday, and as a new transplant to the Gulf Coast, this Appalachian girl is learning all she can about how to prepare for the mercurial changes in weather associated with living down south. But along with the extra flashlights, blankets and bottled water, I’ve also tucked away a few extra tabs of migraine medication. Why the motley assortment? Well, one thing that I’m learning to live with here in the famed Third Coast is that the constant changes in barometric pr… Continue

Migraine sufferers more sensitive to pain and skin sensations

When I feel a migraine coming on, I usually react by taking off my glasses and unfastening my hair clip. Apparently, a recent study suggests that there may be a scientific explanation for my behavior. An article authored by Dr. Marcelo Bigal and colleagues at New York's Albert Einisten College of Medicine detailed findings concluded from surveying over 11,700 migraneurs and their experiences with skin sensitivity during headaches. Published in the April 21 edition of the journal Neurology… Continue

What if preventing cancer were really that easy?

Writing tied to increased quality of life in cancer patients, study confirms

My friend Tina recently pointed me to an article discussing the results of a newly-published study linking cancer patients' journaling exercises to a perceived increase in quality of life. For many of you blogging about your own health conditions, this probably won't strike you particularly ground-breaking news. The emotio… Continue

Health Advocacy, 2.0: Blogging For a Cause

I am constantly amazed by how the internet can pull people together.

Introducing Lindsey

While developing a cluster of WEGO Health pages devoted to fibromyalgia and chronic pain, I stumbled onto the excellent Living with Fibromyalgia blog. Within a 24-hour period, I introduced myself to Lindsey, the author, via email, asked for her expert opinion on some of the pages that I'm building, worked out a co-p… Continue
